What the truck does is that as the RPMs start to climb in a gear it will just cut out for a second then go again just jerking the **** out of the truck and it will continue to do so until it has gained enough ground speed to hit the next gear where it will do it all over again. It seems the higher the R's climb the worse it gets and also the further I push the pedal it gets worse. I will put in a new fuel filter but I have a gut feeling that it might be electrical. The truck has 109K miles on her and has done this for awhile when it was my grandmas truck. she had the cap and rotor replaced along with the plugs awhile ago now. Could It be a ground somewhere or is this a common problem with this era fuel injection. do I need a New "Black mystery box" or what Thanx guys
Sounds like another set of spark plugs would be a good place to start. Does it just stall when this happens and then pick back up, or is it coughing and sputtering? How does it run idling?
It is a 86 F-150 with a 302 and the fuel injection, it runs fine at idle and at highway speed, but if you give it enough juice to kick down it will sputter and jerk the truck. when it pics up for the split second before it cuts back out it will run good and then cut out, pick back up and then cut out, in an endless cycle and sometimes it is so bad that it wont gain any speed to get to the next gear so I have to back out of it, then it runs fine. Thanx guys
I have an 87 Camaro w/fuel injection that was doing the same thing. It was the plugs. Would be a cheap place to start, anyway. Could also be starving for fuel. Fuel pressure regulator or fuel pump maybe? Has your check engine light came on any? I don`t know too much about these computer controlled vehicles but I`ll help however I can. I have all of the manuals on 86`s so maybe we can figure something out. Does it do the same thing in the parking lot or only under load? Anybody else out there got any ideas?
Sounds alot like a bad plug wire. Mine was doing that. If I was maintaining a steady speed, everything seemed fine. If I tried to accelerate, especially quickly, it would sputter and cut out.
II put in new Plugs, wires and a new cap but not a new rotor because I bought a cap and rotor kit but the rotor was the wrong one. I just cleande the old rotor up a bit. it got a little bit better but is is still there. I will put in a nwe rotor and fuel filter to see what happens
WOW!! GOT THE SAME PROBLEM IN MY RV ('90 460 W/FUEL INJ). So far I have replaced all pumps, all filters, added an additional aftermarket "helper pump" outside the tank, used fuelinjector cleaner(s) of about every brand I can get hold of(STP/MAJIC MYSTERY MARVEL OIL/WINNS/SEAFOAM/and mixture of sodium saliticate and chicken blood prepared by VooDoo priest from Haiti) with no noticable difference. Full throttle causes shakes/misses. I have been surfing the posts to see if any one knew what was the problem, and/or possible fix actions I could try. I'm gonna try the "new plug/new wire/new roter-dist.cap" angle too.
JUST REPLACED WIRES/CAP/PLUGS. RUNS GREAT NOW...FUNNY THING, THE PARTS STORE GAVE ME THE WRONG ROTOR TOO!! I DIDN'T KNOW THERE WERE SO MANY DIFFERENT TYPES FOR THE SAME MOTOR.
