hey people looking to buy awinch for my 03 rancher.really want a warn or ramsey but they are so dawm expensive.how about the superwinch brand of winches are they any good
Don't skimp out on the winch. I have a friend that bought a good Warn winch (3000lb I think) and it saved out butts a few times. The other guy we were riding with was amazed at how well it pulled us out (mudding) as his wouldn't winch wouldn't pull himself out.
you might think twice about a winch on an atv. if you want it to mabe help pull the rig out of the mud or help it over a large obstacle fine-but for real pulling they do not work very well, case in point. i borrowed a buddys polaris 425 magnum with a warn 2500 lb winch on it, i shot a good sized cow elk in some pretty thick quakies(aspen trees to ya flat landers) i was able to get the atv to within about 25' so i figured fine i will just use the winch. i hooked it up had the other guy that was with me put the atv in netural and rev it up. once that line got tight, nothing the elk didn't move and the atv didn't and the winch just went errrrrrr. needless to say i was not impressed. i now have a polaris 500 sportsman and i do not have and most likely never will have a winch.
well ya but ya have to figure how much weight are you actually applying to that 2500 lb winch. I'd imagine a moose itself is upwards of that weight and dragging it across the ground adds that much more

We used a winch (not sure what kind or weight) from the front of a friends pickup to move a cow moose once, and it was working the winch. I can imagine that the ATV winch wouldn't even budge it.
it was not a moose! it was an elk, which weighs 400-600 lbs on the hoof(a cow moose will go 600-1000), and after the winch did nothing myself and my 60 year old father dragged it to where we could get it hooked to the atv.
The other thing is how much juice are you supplying to the winch. Most 2500 pound winches require 165+ amps under full load. If you can not supply that to the winch constantly under full load, it is not going to move you like you want.
ATV winches are great for getting ATVs unstuck, though I would not plan on hauling a full sized animal. They create more drag then a huge log.

I hear ya and it's a nice feeling to have one when you need it. My wife gave me a Warn A2000 two years ago for a gift and I have it mounted on my Honda Foreman 450S with a mount kit from Cabelas. I don't use it that often but it's a godsend when you need it.
I was by myself one time last fall and got stuck in a creek about 3 miles away from the house and was able to pull myself out in about 5 minutes. I'll never be without one again. I've also used to pull some small logs up over creek banks and things like that.
I had good luck with the Warn but they don't make the 2000lb winch now I don't think. They have a 2500 and a 3000 now which is even better. Another nice thing about them is all the ATV catalogs carry parts and seolenoids for them so if they wear out or break you can fix them yourself with a repair kit which is good beacuse they're not cheap. It took me about 2 hrs to install it myself with the mount plate from Cabelas. Go for it-you won't regret it.

well then just say that!!! that was not you first question, as i said is you want a winch to pull you out of the mud or or pull you over a log fine. not knowing what you wanted the winch for i was just giving you some real world info. dont worry it wont happen again
Off the topic I guess, but the next time you have to move 600lbs of deadweight elk on rough ground try this:
Instead of putting the ATV in neutral, put it in reverse and get the quad and the winch pulling at the same time.
Better yet, just hook a tow strap to the back axle of the ATV and around the elk's head, put it in 4wd low and give it hell! If it spins have your buddy sit on the front rack. I know we're talking about a Polaris but even it'll pull an elk if you do that!
ATV winches are designed mainly to move the wheeled and rollable ATV it's mounted on. They're not industrial strength. My Honda 450 in 4wd 1st will pull alot more than my winch will!
moutainhound,s far as backing it up, is was wedged in there pretty good(the atv) otherwise i would not have even tried the winch, the axle thing is a good idea i will have to try that, as far as a polaris goes-that has to do with buying the best, buying american, that sort of thing. see ya on the hill
I wouldn't go out on my ATV's without a winch. But I do a lot of riding in lowland. My Polaris's go through a lot, but sometimes I need to wrap a cable around a tree. I've used Warn exclusively, 2000 lbs, but must emphasize how important a good battery is to the winch's effectiveness.
