I just read through the long but very interesting thread on egr a couple of months back. My rebuild is under way and I have upped the C/R to mid 9's, powermax cam. some head work, and Performer 400 with carb. How should I deal with the stock distributor as far as the advance goes? Or should I use it to bottom fish for cats? It's a 79 f150 turned into a 400. I have to go through emissions testing the first time with everything visually in place, and pass or spend $150 trying to make it pass. After that I will fall into an exemption if I drive less than 5,000 miles a year which I will do.
I have emailed Dennis to see if he can find that number. Or maybe Bubbaf250 or Bill has that information.
It may still need to be detuned for non EGR operation. I do not remember if the 1971 models had EGR. I have slept a few too many times since those days. I believe they may have started in 1972 but parts books should show which years EGR systems were used.
I would think you'd just install a vacuum advance from a non EGR model. I have a '71 that is a California vehicle, and it has no EGR. Just get a vacuum advance for a '71.
I really don't think this is a big issue to begin with.
