Just acquired 66 F250 with auto transmission. Truck needs a total rebuild so in course of doing that thought I would convert it to a 4 speed manual. Truck currently has a '74 390 and I purchased the original 352 with the truck. Any thoughys/suggestions on feasibility of trans change-over, and if so with which engine? Thx for any and all input. J.
Anything can be done!! You would need a clutch/brake pedal assy, a manual trans and bellhousing, manual trans flywheel, clutch pieces and related linkage, and prolly a different driveline. I'm sure there are other pieces but that gives you an idea of parts needed.
The transplant would be very simple IF you could get all related pieces from the same donor truck.BTW the 352 and 390 used the same bellhousing and a flywheel for either engine will fit the other. Some 390 flywheels had an 11 1/2" clutch so would need to size to fit.
how come you want to convert to standard? i like standards to but if i had an auto with the truck then id keep it. also you may want to invest in a 5 speed overdrive, youre doing the conversion so you may as well go with a nice tranny.
I agree -- I have a Warner t18, which, along with the NP435s, were the common 4 speeds in 66. You really don't want that unless you intend to pull really heavy stuff slowly down the road. They are rotten in traffic, and the grany low is practically worthless, except for the rare times when you have a 15,000 lb trailer behind. The spread between 1st and second is a huge leap, so that even if you were to put very high gears in the rear, say 2.75, so as to use the first gear and make a "overdrive" like situation for 4th, the jump from 1st to second is still too much.
Unless you are purist looking for a very correct restauration, I would not look to go back to the original NP435 or t18.
For driving pleasure a later 5 speed maual with overdrive or 5 speed automatic with OD would be cool and efficient. Personally, if I ever shell out my T18, I will look for a 5 speed automatic OD unit from a much later era. But since my t18 is nearly impossible to destroy, I suppose I am stuck with it for now.
Thx all for the input. Had not thought of the gearing and road speed. Will stay with the auto trans which is how the truck was built. Have seen in other forums that switching front drum brakes to later discs is a good investment in safety and peace of mind. How difficult is that conversion? And what later year is recommended?
