wiring question

I'm an idiot when it comes to wiring... Give me an engine, and I can rebuild it, but give me a wiring diagram, and some wires, and I'll surely fry something!

Anyway, I was just trying to add some power outlets above my rear view mirror.
I spliced into the green wire to the dome light for a constant power source and drilled a hole and ran the other wire to a sheet metal screw for ground.
Should be simple enough right?
Well, I have everything back together, and the dome light and map lights work (there on the same fuse right?) but my outlets have no power. It didn't blow the fuse, so I know nothing is REALLY messed up...
Any ideas on what I might have done wrong? Should I run the ground wire to somewhere else?
I want a place to plug my radar detector in and not have the wire dangling down to the ash tray... Less conspicuos to cops, and thieves.

Edit, here's a link to my power sockets. Ignore the long screws, it was dark, getting cold, and I just wanted it up so it wasn't dangling by the wires. I need to find some shorter screws.

A test light comes in handy for stuff like this.
It does sound like you should look at your ground wire.

by using a cheap $1 test light you could tell if the power or the ground was the problem.

I used a test light to find out which wire had constant power, and which was switched to the doors. I'll have to investigate further in the morning. I just wondered if maybe I should run the ground back to the dome light also.

That sounds like a good spot.

if you drilled a hole in the truck, did you strip the paint? you might not be making contineuity.

your dome light is switched through ground. did you meter your wires with the door open? if so both wires will be hot.it may sound stupid but just a thought. yes a 1 dollar test light is a very good investment.
