I've changed the plugs, pcv, and cleaned the MAF, and for about 4 days she ran like new again: crisp response, and much better feel all around. But now it feels just like it did prior to the work I've mentioned. As I stated in the subject line, the truck is, once again, a dog from 1st gear, but when i get up to speed on the freeway it feels fine.
from what i understand it's a distrubutor-less rig so there's no timing to set, correct (If i'm understanding what you're asking)? The timing belt has not been changed. I've changed out the air filter recently. I'm not sure I know what a breather is. Thanks Bob
fuel filter could need changing, could be an 02 sensor possibly...i think they start to go around 100k if not before depending on what generation you have....i believe yours would be a second generation heated which are the longest lasting ones theyve come out with yet...but im not 100% sure so dont quote me on that. You might have something going in with your vacuum system too, perhaps a slight hole, i know this is all pretty vague and thats a lot of "could be's" but maybe it will help ya out some. good luck!

check the marks on the cam and crank gears. put the crank at TDC and make sure the cam mark is lined up. its possible the belt jumped a cog or two.
did you put a k&n filter in or just a regular paper one? if its a k&n maybe the oil coated the maf again or somthing like that. otherwise how about all the fluids? have those been changed recently?
I had the timing belt replaced, and I changed out both the fuel filter and the o2 sensor. The truck is running much better now. However, I've noticed a "whirring" sound now coming from the engine that is fairly pronounced. I'm not sure if it's the new belt, or I'm hearing a bearing. It would be a real bummer if my water pump is going bad after changing the timing belt.
I'd appreciate any help in tracking down the culprit of this noise.
It's definitely present at idle, but it's hard to tell once the rpm's are raised because the noise of the engine drowns out what might in fact be there. The sound is present( at least at idle) when the engine is cold and when it's warmed up.
