my apologies for taking so long to respond.

Doesn't really sound like a jet engine. It more sounds like a tea kettle at a very low boil, and after listening over the last couple days, the sound does stop once i raise the rpms.

It's hard too tell without hearing it. If the sqealing goes away at higher RPMs, the squealing might still be there just too high of a frequency to hear. My best guess without ever experiencing this problem first hand would be a bearing or a tight belt. Is the sound coming from the front of the engine or the rear? Does it sound like its inside the engine or outside?

it's coming from within the engine bay, I'm sure about that. And given that the sound started right after changing out the belt, it only makes sense that it's either the belt being too tight, or, a bearing going out on the water pump. That being said, and becuase this sound seems so sporadic after the truck is warm , I wonder if it's just one of those things that I'll leave with until it bites me in the rear!!!! El Conq, what's the story with your noise?

mine had a noise. It turns out it was one of the pullys bearings rusting out. I figured this out when the pulley unscrewed itself in the middle of winter. That was fun (not)

check all your pulleys to make sure none of them are loose. Also, with your engine running see if any of the pulleys seem out of alignment. Rockledge had a similar problem and he took all of his pulleys off and cleaned them with brake cleaner and scrubbed the pulley groove (where the belt rides) with an emory cloth. Did you replace the timing belt or did a shop do it? If a shop did I would take it back and tell them what your experiencing.

hey el conq,

the serpintine belt was changed out about 15k back. I would think it's still in good shape.

Lone--The timing belt was replaced by a shop. I'm going to take it in and let them listen to it. I'll let you know what I find out.

Hey guys,

I was out of town and wasn't able to take it to the shop, but here's an update:

I was driving home tonight, and I could barely keep the truck at freeway speed! It feels like there's a tremendous drag on the engine and I could tell by the fuel gauge that I was burning through the gas much quicker than normal. The whirring sound IS present when revved. Not good....

Definetely not good, take it back to the shop ASAP. It almost sounds like a bearing is bound up. I'm not an expert, all my sugestions are just my logic. This is not good at all though. Good Luck and don't let the shop screw you over.

Hey lone,

Yeah, I'm taking it in the morning. Any idea how many parts we're talking about that have bearings with relation to the timing belt? Water pump...what else? All my gauges(for what they're worth) read normal and the oil level was fine.

Camshafts, all the pulleys, alternator and a few others I'm probably missing.

Here's a question:

If when the shop replaced my timing belt they tightened it to the point where the belt jumped a tooth or two, would that explain the problem I'm now experincing?

It's in the shop now, but I'm just trying to gather as much info now in case they try to s!@#$ me...

I don't think having the belt too tight would cause it to jump teeth but it probably would if it was too loose. I'd ask Ken the moderator about it, he's pretty good at diagnosing.
