Overdrive/transmission

I have a 1997 F150 4x4 with overdrive. 124000 miles.

My problem: I am getting a chugging/clanking noise after I have slowed down then press the gas for more speed. This only happens in OD. ( mostly highway, but at slower speeds also).
This has been happening for about 3 months.

Here are a few thing I have observed.
at 55 mph my rpm guage reads 17000
at 50 mph my rpm guage reads 14000
in park my rpm guage reads 7000
Tranny fluid is good (recent tranny service at Ford)
U-Joints are good.

Anybody have an idea what is happening?

Thanks in advance

No idea but if you are turning 17000 rpm,Ford will probably want that engine back

7000 rpm in park is impressive . . .

I think something needs recalibrated or you are hanging an extra "0" on the end of everything!

Talking

My 302 with 300,000+ on it turned 5grand in a mud hole once. But running 7k in park well things might start coming apart.

Not a big motorhead but if the needle is at 15 on the RPM guage, and at the bottom of the guage it says RPM X 1000, then I assumed it meant 15,000
(Simple math on my part 15 x 1000=15000)

Just a few more thoughts on my problem, It reminds me of trying to let the clutch out from a dead stop in third gear. So it seems like it isn't kicking out of overdrive, when I am speeding up..

woodboy each mark, on your tach, which has a number by it is X 1000. As in the 1 means 1000, each mark after that is 100 until you get to the # 2 which would be 2000 rpms.

could be a throttle postion sensor, or possibly a rear speed sensor. Is your speedo working proporly? Take it to an autozone and advance autoparts and they will pull the codes for free.

If Red Forman was my dad he would be calling me a DumbA$$ !!!
Don't know what I was thinking but I had my brain on off when looking at the RPM Guage for the last couple of months. After work last night I reevaluated my thought process and came to the conclusion that I did add an extra 0 on to the RPMs, and boy do I feel stupid....

I was gonna say....700 is a healthy idle ( my L6 idles at 600-700), and it also runs 1400 rpms at 55, 1900 at 62 miles per hour.

WoodBoy, While we don't always admit it, it happens to the best of us. I agree with Saurian about your RPM readings minus that extra zero. They aren't all that bad.
