Speedometer...

Any of you guys, especially w/ the early 90's models ever have a problem with the speedometer in cold weather not working? Mine never does, it just dances around til it gets stuck in about the 5 oclock position on the dash, then I gotta either bang on the dash, or stick some wire in there (through the tripometer reset shaft hole) and grab it loose. Seems to work most of the time during the summer, all of the time even, I think atleast. It also makes a noise, just kinda a rattling noise. Anyone know how to fix it? Any suggestions???? Thanks guys...

It's a well known issue. Ford has issued a TSB on the matter; it involves replacing the speedo head.

Technical Service Bulletin-look at the upper right hand corner on this page and click on Recalls/TSB's. Should find some info there.

Thanks hreed for your help. And anyone else that helped me. The other code that came up at the emission station was 0420. Would you know what that means, and the check engine light went out atlast. but that made me fail also. It used to stay on, and go off every now and then. But it's not coming on when I start the truck. Appreciate any help you can give.

I think the upshot of the TSB involves installing a new, revised speedo head. I can only wonder how much Ford charges for the part.

Ya, so I have to pay for all of this though, right? I mean, certainly those recalls or whatever have an expiration date, right?

Unfortunately, you'll be buying. A TSB is not a recall.

Had the whirring & jumping needle on my 95 Taurus. Took it to a speedometer shop & the guy pressed in a new "jewel" for 120 bucks. He told me he had done quite a few of these for the local Ford dealer. Warranty work.

No quick fixes?? It only does it when its cold, summertime it doesnt do it. Was Ken talking to me asking for numbers? Or the guy that mis-posted about the codes?

Traxxis, if you need to see the TSB I should have it. I can email it to you if you drop me an email with the TSB number.
