97 Explorer - Check Engine Light

97 Explorer - Check Engine Light
Hey all I have a 97 explorere that has the check engine light on. I thought this light had to do something with the emissions of the engine but I may be wrong. What does this light mean and what is it going to take for me to fix it?

It means the cars computer has picked up a signal that indicates something may be wrong. It could be emissions or something else. Take it to autozone, and they will pull the codes for you free of charge. Once you have the codes, post them here and we can help you with the next steps.

If the code is related to the oxygen sensors, there might be a TSB or recall on your vehicle's VIN. My daughter's 97 kept having her oxygen sensor trigger the CEL light until they tightened her lower manifold intake as part of a recall. She paid quite a bit for replacing those da#n things.

Is it idleing rough as well, if so it could be the lower intake o-rings, that was my problem. If so you will get Po174 and or Po171 errors at autozone. There is an ONP Owner Notification Program for this so do a search for o-rings to find out more.
