Turbo?

Has anyone heard of a turbo for the 3.0 V6 that is in the aerostar. I have seen some Turbo ford probes but they were all 4cyl. After I finish my current mods, the turbo will be next. These include :

Cold Air intake
75hp shot of Nitrous
5 speed manual tranny
Ranger 3.0 JBA headers
Digital dash

Am concerned whether the stock rear end will be able to withstand the extra torque, but I guess that I will see. The JBA headers will not work with the stock exhaust but I am removing that anyway and running twin 3 1/2 inch pipes to the rear to twin bomb mufflers.

You won't be able to use the headers if you have a turbo, they require a dedicated manifold for the turbo to bolt up to. If you are concerned about the stock rear end, perhaps an 8.8 out of a truck or mustang would work in our vans.

You probably wont need a custom tranny they did make 5 speed manuals for the aerostar right up until the end of 1993... considering I own one hehe. They're fairly reliable and can take a pounding (Towing or speed or otherwise)

You are right on. I am planning on finding a late 80's or early 90's donor Aerostar. The tranny your van has and I want is the Mazda M5R1. Am pulling out all components and then rebuilding/replacing the worn parts. The tranny should hold up fine, but the rear end scares me. Will it hold up? Who knows.

Have you considered going the supercharged route? I only say that because I'm biased towards them

Well if you are worried about the rear end consider looking into a new differential and maybe a stronger/newer driveshaft. There was a whole episode the other day on horsepower TV on how to replace your differential on a rear wheel drive solid axle car. IT was kewl they went from the vehicle's standard differential to a brand new limited slip... and this car was like 30 years old.
NOTE: If you do decide to do work on your differential try getting a high strength plastic cover for it rather than a metal one... it'l illiminate rusting problems... I havfe one on mine... it works very very well no cracks no leaks no rust...

After looking at both superchargers and turbos I am probably going the route of supercharger. Looks like it will be easier to hook up and a lot cheaper. Have found one from a 3.8 v6 which looks like it would work but I'm not sure of the different sizes in the blocks since I have a 3.0. The one I saw replaced the entire intake manifold.

It won't bolt directly up. IIRC the 3.8L is a 90* block, where ours is a 60* block. Which car is it out of?

The only bolt-on kit for a 3.0 is made by whipple, but it's supposed to be kick-butt.

edit: If you want to make a custom kit, I would suggest a Centrifugal Supercharger (like a Paxton or Vortech), mainly because it takes up less space in the engine compartment (which is an important factor with the aerostar), and are fairly easy to find.

That having been said, I love eaton blowers, they make power everywhere and are quite durable. The main problem is the inlet on that type is on the opposite side of the pulley/nose drive. Thus, the throttle body would face the firewall, so it would require more plumbing to work well.
