My truck is an 02 F250 Auto w/ the 5.4L engine. I was pulling my new travel trailer(approx 4k empty/6K when fully loaded) down to Pismo Beach CA.
When going 55mph with o/d off and hitting an upsloap in the road, not a major climb, the trans dropped from Drive to 2nd and we heard a sound coming from the tranny. It sounded like when you stick a playing card into a fan and we also felt the trans and or the drive train shake/rattle , not violently but enough to be very concerned. This did not happen everytime it dropped to 2nd, but about 5-6 times on a 200 mile trek.
On the way back in the same area, It dropped it into 2nd on a hill and again heard the noise and a more drastic shake/ratlle and then it bounced back into drive with a pop.
Seems like going 55mph and the trans drops to 2nd gear is just to much speed for the trans. However, the trans shouldn't be dropping into 2nd at that speed anyway. What were your RPM's before and after the gear drop?
Sorry I made a mistake in what I posted. Instead of dropping to 2nd, I should have said "Kicking into WOT". Does that make more sense? The RPMS where around 3-4K
