When is it wise to start changing out the plug and plug wires on a '00 Ranger? I know what the manual says, but just in general I wanted to know what experience dictates.
The truck is running just fine, but my fuel economy is slipping and I wanted to eliminate the electrical system from the equation. Air cleaner is clean, fuel filter is changed out, serpentine is nice and snug. After that I guess the only thing left is wires and plugs - cause I don't think it has a distributer cap to replace since its electronic.
I'd say anything over 60K should respond nicely to new plugs & wires. Use Motorcraft or Autolite Double Platinum plugs, and don't skimp on the wires, either.
That MAF sensor looks like a mistake waiting to happen. I'll get some carb cleaner and dry it off good. Might be all I need, but yeah I probably should replace the wires and plugs.
umm chage the oil, new air filter , fuel filter, pcv valve, clean the intake plume(spelling?) its easy you just ave to disconnect some hoses and take out 4 bolts. use some brake clean to clean it out and a tooth brush. then run some fuel injector cleaner though your tank and wihle your at it pull the injectors and clean them with cleaner you can get it from a parts store. then you should be good as new. o 1 more thing check your trans fulid and rearend oil.
That's why I keep coming back! It's a love/hate relationship with my trucks. They love to break; I hate to fix them. But can't afford to take it to a shop (they usually don't get it right anyway), and it is satisfying to get the CEL to turn off for 3 weeks before something else goes wrong.
