I wanted to see if if anyone has used the CD2 oil stop leak. my beater (300-6) leaks a ton of oil out of the rear main, and I dumped a bottle in to see if it might help. I know the real fix is to replace the seal, however, being I paid $600 for the truck, I don't feel like ripping out the tranny&t-case... just curious on if anyone has had any positive / negative results.
i havent used that brand but i used some other stop leak stuff. i guess its worth a try but in all honesty that stop leak stuff is a gimmick. ive got a leaking 352 and it did nothing. those companys want you to just try it once people try it they know its just crap. thats how they make the money once its in your crankcase youre screwed with a cheap gimmick that just thinned out your oil. it would be nice to have somthing you just pour in and it majically stops leaks.
I used one of the "stop leak" products a few years back on my wife's Maxima. It did help reduce the leaking from the rear main seal.
The additives work by swelling the seals and thereby reducing leakage. It was a band-aid, not a cure.
I do not think they will cause any harm. My guess is they use standard dino base as a carrier (30wt?) for the additives used to expand the seals.
Right now, I am running regular 10w40... I was debating on jumping upto 20w50 when it gets warm out.. my oil pressure could be a little better.. So, when it warms up, I'm dropping the pan and replacing the oil pump, then I'll probably change the seal.
20w50 won't make it leak more by pushing out harder on the seals will it?
just thought I'd get an opinion.. I figured worse case would be i'd be out of $2.89...
