I have a 2000 F250 w/ the Triton V10. Its been a great truck for the first 4050 miles(it was a leftover)but lately (past month and half) it has been clicking and ticking on cold start up. It quietly does this for about 1 to 2 minutes, 15 seconds after the initial start. The curious thing is that it only does this on cold mornings, roughly 50 degrees or less.
The dealer acknoldged the noise and explained that when he called Ford they said that the "pistons need time to expand on cold mornings".
I've been through all the old message boards looking for similar symptoms and although several came close, nothing quite fit. If anyone has any guidance, advice and/or experience with this please drop me a line. Thanks in advance.
NoMo, I, of course, noticed all the messages about piston slap but I thought they fixed that w/ the 2000s. Also my symptoms were a little diffrent.
I'm just wondering if this is going to get worse over time and if so what I can do to protect myself if these problems go past my 3year/36,000 mile warranty.
I've heard cheap oil filters can cause this to happen. Problem could be lack of oil at immediate start up. I just read a huge topic on this. I'll try to find it again and post it. It might be down in the oil and lube section. What kind of filter are you usin'? I hear Fram makes it happen the most. Try to stay with Motorcraft or similar. The got 'em at Wally World... A report I read showed that Fram really suck...

Well, Ford says they fixed it, but there have been a few people with 2000s get their engine repaced after a PS diagnosis. Does it sound like an exhaust leak? The heads & manifold may not be sealing until they get hot & expand.
If the noise lasts 1-2 minutes, I'd rule out the oil filter theory (no offense monsta ). The pump should have oil back up into the heads in less time than this noise lasts.

Certainly none taken...You're right, the oil should be up there by then. Plus, as I read his post again, if it were the oil filter then it should do it at ALL air temps. You could take to a couple different dealers to see if all their stories match...

ya know, I can't remember...you can steal it from me at my half-a**, undercontruction website though.

Yowzers!! :-staun My wife'll never let me do that to mine! Somethin' about bein' able to put the kids in it or somethin' like that. I told her that that's what cargo trailers are for!! I didn't get any last night...:-(
We watched What Women Want... the movie where Mel Gibson "hears" women's thoughts and becomes sensitive to their desires. When the movie was over, I made some comment about even if we could hear their thoughts, they still wouldn't make sense to us guys. Needless to say, I didn't get any either.
at least you guys had to make 'em mad to get cut off! I was an absolute saint(!) yesterday, but I didn't get any last night either. The reason??? She wanted to watch "Extreme Homes" on HGTV!!! Ohhh, the Humanity!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the feedback. Sorry for the delay, it was the Christmas rush and I got caught up in it.
In response to your question about exhaust noise, no I don't think thats it although I did have the Y replaced (the tsb) awhile back. And with regard to oil, when the dealer did the service at 3000 they used Motorcraft.
Who Knows? Its probably no big deal and it may go away with time so I'll just wait and see. Happy Holidays and thanks agian for your input.
