spyware troubles

Before I begin, I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT COMPUTERS. Anyways, A friend was kind enough to load Kazaa onto my comp. Gee thanks, I really didn't want that on there..... I deleted it, but I've got all kinds of trouble now. Mainly, When I try to search, it takes me to the same site, no matter what. I downloaded ad-aware, and deleted a bunch of stuff, but I'm still unable to search. Is there something else I have to do after I delete these files to bring my browser back to normal? This sucks.... Thanks if anyone can help.

i had the same problem with my KAZA. it got to the point where i was getting seriouslt 20-30 popups at a time. to fix this i downloaded spy-bot at spybot.com
also google toolbar from goolge.com

kaza must have spyware to work, so i saved all the songs and "stuff" to a different file and deleted kaza

no more popups

since then i dont get any pop ups

Ad-aware
Spybot
Spyware Blaster

I run all three of these. They each pick up different things other miss. Also, the Blaster blocks harmful items from ever being cached on youre computer. Great stuff! Brian_Puff, you should run Kazaa-lite. It is a modified version of Kazza that removes all of the spyware associated with the normal version. If you want, I can provide you with the install file.

Oh, I also have a great *free* popup blocker too. It can be foud at http://www.panicware.com/product_psfree.html . They only drawback is that it will block certain things on pages (like aol.com, if you open an email, it wont allow it. You just have to temporarily disable it). It blocks all javascript popups (which aol utilizes). I love it as well.

AdAware and Spybot are fairly effective but may miss a few. I'd suggest you also use Hijackthis and Bazooka Spyware Scanner; both should be available from downloads.com. Some spyware will be missed by all of these; in such cases you will have to be more agressive and manually remove the components and edit the registry while in safe mode. Also, when using the four noted spyware/adware removal packages, make the appropriate backups before removing questionable items. Popup blockers do sort of solve the adware issue(s) but sadly they don't fix the real problem; they only mask it. And they do little if not nothing to address spyware issues.

On edit;

Things like Gator, Gain, WebHancer, BonziBuddy, BarginBuddy, XXX toolbar, and ClearSearch are fair game for immeditate removal.

Thats the beauty of Spyware blaster. It blocks all known spyware from ever being downloaded onto youre machine. Since I have used it, I think I have found one or two spyware related items on my computer (versus the 30 or so Id see a day). Do you have links for the Hijackthis and Bazooka?

Kazaa uses Gain Advertising to pay for the service. You will need to find all of it to get rid of it. Spybot should do the trick.

Or run Kazaa-lite (as mentioned before). If anyone wants the Kazaa-lite software, just let me know. BTW, I believe it states that if you alter that GAIN software, youre KAZAA probably wont work properly.

Call over that 14 year old computer nerd kid from next door and have him clean your computer for you.

Many of those programs do a good job.

My son had screen shot from a friends computer running ad-aware that showed 1394 problems that it had found.

Rich, you are correct, Gain is embedded in Kazaa, if it is removed, kazaa won't work, but sandrat said he didn't want it anyway.

That's a dirty trick what Kazaa puts onto a computer these days.

I downloaded and ran it and then removed it with spyware cause it was so bad.

Makes me wonder it the music recording industry is behind it.
