Bench Seat

Ok I know this has been discussed before but I want a reclining split bench seat for my truck. What have most of you used in this department? Ed

Re: Bench Seat

F.

I personally don't see how it's possible to mount one.
I've looked the interior diamentions up as published by FoMoCo & just don't see that there is any kind of room to mount a Reclining Split Bench Seat.
If installed, which looks to be a magic act in & of itself, once the seat is moved foreword to tip the seat back ones knees are jammed up against the dashboard.
Then the oposit is true w/ the seat shoved back in order to be able to drive, the seat can't be tilted back because of the Petrol Tank & the rear frame of the cab.

Split bench yes, but there ain't no way on the reclining part in a stock cab. Just over stuffing my stock seat a bit caused issues.

I installed a '94 gmc bench in my 53, great fit and provides more comfort and room than stock 53 seat. It does tilt forward, does not recline . Joe

Do you guys know if a seat that fits a 53-56 will also fit a 48-52? I was leaning toward using a stock seat since I'm using the original gas tank, but a later model seat would probably be more comfortable in my 48. The 94 GMC bench seat would be nice if it would fit...

Joe, did you have to raise the GMC seat or was it okay stock? Do you have the stock gas tank and was there any interference? How about room between the seat back and the steering wheel?

Vern I used the gmc brackets on the floor. drilled four holes and bolted down with large flat reinforcement plates under the floor. The gas tank in a 53 is not behind the seat, so no problem there. The room between the seat back and steering wheel is greater than the stock 53 seat, however, when I installed the van tilt column, I changed the angle from the stock column. Really I don't think your F1 is as wide as the 53 and this seat probably won't work for you. Joe

Okay big question here....

Does the new seats from a 2001 and up seat fit a 1954?? i would like to have the seat belts already mounted to the seat instead of the frame....looks cleaner...or do I have to succumb to the GM line and buy one of their seats...any suggestions PLEASE?? right now i have a 84 ranger seat but the wifey wants some head protection in their now so that is why I am switching seats out...me personally i think that it takes away from the look inside from a back window but it is more comfortable with a headrest...can't complain there...

On long trips the ability to lean back instead of sit up straight is so much better. I drove to Central America one time in a 97 F-150 in a stock bench seat and I will never do it again. The most uncomfortable ride of my life. I want the ability to get at least a small amount of recline. Ed

James, a while back I picked up a new seat out of a '98 F250 and tried to mount it in my '53. It was wide enough to touch both doors at the same time, without any panels on the doors. I sold the seat and have been looking for a new seat since. A local 4x4 shop told me that Ford started using wider seats in their cabs starting about the 1998 year, so he said 1997 and earlier Ford, Chevy and Dodge seat were the same wide (or close). I don't know if all that is true but it sems to be. I have thought about using buckets seats and center console out of a newer Ford truck. Need to get the tape measure out. Bottom line, bench seats out of newer Fords are a tad too wide for the '53 and on trucks.
Let us know if you find any good seats. I seen a lot of trucks that have used various GM car seats and they seemed to looks OK.

Good luck!!

Hey Ed, If you are dead set on reclining, how about a kingcab?!! There are a couple of very nice projects on this site. That would give you the extra 6-8" you will need for the reclined cruise position. Good luck, John
