Any subtle and not so subtle ways of telling the difference between a 360 and a 390 would be appreciated. I have a 76 F-150 Ranger SuperCab LWB, sold to me by a friend who claimed he put a 390 in it.
It's impossible by looking, but, the 360 FE had 3.50" of stroke with a 4.05" bore and the 390 FE had 3.78" of stroke with a 4.05" bore.
All of them had "352" stamped by the right-side water inlet if I'm not mistaken.
The only way I know to tell is by looking at the the back of the crankshaft. If it has a half-moon cut in it then it's a 360 I believe, if it has a square cut keyway type deal then it is a 390. I guess one other way to tell is by the way it runs, unless it's a 360 with some perf. mods. Time for someone else who knows more to step in but your best bet would be to go to the FE forum on this site.
Take a look at the front of the block, as stated the side has 352 cast in, and I seem to recall a 360 or 390 cast into the front of the block. It's worth a look anyway.
