what do you guys with headers use for exhaust after getting long tubes. I got an estimate of $250 for new 2.25 pipe on my truck. Or would using mufflers after the headers be practical?
Mufflers right after the headers don't seem to last very long. I think its the heat, it also resonates like crazy right under your feet in a std cab p'up. I use 2 1/2" pipes, with a 2 1/4" crossover, and mufflers exit in front of the rear tires.
Agreed. If you use mufflers with any sort of packing behind the headers they will burn out pretty quick. I did this once and the noise in the cab was pretty gruesome too. I usually run my exhaust past the cab and dump out before the rear axle. This gives you less bends in your line, which equals less restriction and also less cost to install.
I did the "Mufflers under the cab" thing. What a mistake, couldn't hear myself think (which may or may not be a good thing).
I ended up having the mufflers moved back to mid-bed and then dumped towards the ground just in front of the axle.
I run 3" pipe from the headers back to my flowtech warlocks. They have the plugs you can remove to bypass the muffler. I have turndowns right out the back of the muffler and it dumps right before the rear axle. It does make the cab a little noisy but its nothing compared to the open header sound. I have thought about running it all the way to the back as I don't use the exhaust pipes at the track anyway. I'll give up 10HP on the street for a little comfort.
i have 2 1/4 exhaust comeing out of my headers that exit right before the real wheels with dual tips comeing out in front of the rear wheels on both sides, i dont know how it sounds as my 390 isnt back in the truck yet.
I am working diligently on my truck and just recently put Flowmasters on and ran the pipe out the back under the bumper. I love the sound. BUT I can't get the exhaust manifolds to stop leaking. One of my manifolds I know is warped. Rather than change the exhaust manifolds could I put headers on with my Flowmasters?
i have 21/2 out of headders about 2 feet to flowmasret y to 3 inch to 1 big flowermaster muffler under bed across from saddle tank and 3 inch that dumps just past rear tire on pass side sounds great and smokes the tires good to 72 f250
