'91 Explorer XLT, 4.0L pushrod.
Rebuilt after oil pump went out on hunting trip. Had noticed what sounded like spark knock and even had times with loss of power and the knocking. Turns out the oil pump was going. Everytime I looked, the oil guage was indicating good pressure.
Could someone inform me as to weather or not there is a replacement for the oil sender switch and where to get it.
It really gets to me that I have a guage in the dash that serves no more purpose that a light.
I have looked at Equus and SunPro but their pressure senders work reversed as to my needs.
Do a google search for "Ford dummy gauge" or something to that extent. There is a super duty page (forget who it belongs to) that has the steps and parts needed on his page.
Be advised that the oil gauge on most stock Explorers is really a 'idiot light' in disguise. The needle with deflect to 'normal' when the oil pressure rises above about 5#. It does not adjust to actual pressure based on engine rpm, viscocity, etc. I think there are other posts which discuss this issue.
I find that the gauge is real but the sender is just a switch set at about 5 lb.
The only suggestion I have found is to install a pre- '87 sender and jumper across the 20 ohm resister at the guage.
It's a thought.
Thanks, everyone.
Much thanks to you AlfredB1979.
The site you suggested answered all my questions.
The fix will only cost about $10. Pulling the instument panel will be the hardest part.
Thanks to everyone.
