I have a 1984 f-150 4x4 4speed with a worn out 351. I would like to get some opinions on weather i should buy this 460 i found in a 78 lincoln continental the motor only has 10,000 miles on it. And the lady wants 300 dollars for the whole car. Or just wait on a small block? How much trouble would it be to put the big 460 in there? I take the truck off road alot but dont really do any serious muddin, I have 33's on now, but soon i'm going to get 35 or 38's.... Any advice would be appreciated thanks...
it's been sitting about 5 years....so how much trouble will it be to put it in there....another thing i know the motor is not locked up because i manually turned it over. It didnt have a soloniod so i went and bought one and i cant figure out how to hook it up... when i hook it upthe one of the connecters to the soloniod turn red or spark please help i need to get this car running thanks
With only 10K miles I would take it slow and easy with it. I would remove the spark plugs and drip a little Marvel Mystery Oil in the cylinders and let it set for a few hours.
As far as the solenoid, you may have to look at the setup a little closer. If you are sure the wires are going into the right connector, you might check the ignition switch and make sure is not stuck. Also make sure there's an engine and chassis ground. Is there anything under the hood that looks suspicious? Does it looked cannibalized?
You should not get fire to the solenoid except from the battery when the key is off - unless the wiring harness has been tinkered with.
I suppose you have the 351 Windsor in your truck now?

It's quite a lot of work to properly install a 460 where a 351 came out of.
It can be a real pain to find a donor truck (460) to strip parts from such as pulleys, brackets etc.
It can get expensive and time consuming!!!
I would not suggest it for your first motor swap experience!
But when it's done, YA HOO !!! It's worth it!
Good luck on your decision!
I figured out the solonoid problem......WHERE IT WAS MOUNTED ON THE plastic FENDER WALL there was no bracket or anything that grounded it. it is not my first motor swapped i've put an 302 in the place of an inlince six and i've put and inline six in place of an 351.....What is the cheapest i could put the motor in for after i bought it, i was thinking a 460 bellhousing from a junk yard....and new clutch, flywheel, throw out berring oilpan gasket, oil and filter, plugs wires, and i've heard that i will have to knotch the frame out with a torch so the exhaust could get by?? Thanks
The cheapest you could install the motor for is up to you and your resources and connections!
The crossmember under the motor on factory installed 460's and diesels is different from the rest. It is angled down in the front to allow clearence for the 90 degree oil filter adapter.
To get around this you elongate the existing hole to the front (using a hotwrench) once the motor is installed and use the Lincoln setup.
No other notching is required!
I have done this a couple of times and never had a problem with the frame cracking afterwards!
I purchased the motor mounts from L&L Products. Simple, decent quality, lifetime warranty, reasonably priced.
Bolt on, drop in (perfect)
Just about every manufacturer makes hedders for this application!
Good luck!
