Hey guys, how much trouble is the installation of such an engine with a C6 transmission. Am I really bonkers for even thinking of such. I have heard much about the weight but according to the stats on a 292 vs a 390 they are very close to the same weight. What do you guys think. Do not move this to the engine swap forum. Most of those guys do not have 50's fords. BTW I have a 54 ford f-100. Ed
Ed, I have a 289 in my 54, but I've seen just about everything including a blown 460 with headers. You will need to put in new motor mounts no matter which other-than-stock engine you decide. So if you have a 390 you like, I vote yes, go for it. But, remember, if you are going to put in power steering, that takes up room in the engine compartment too. I think if I was going to put a new engine in a truck I was building, I would opt for the 351. But, that's only my preference. Good luck, John
Arghh. That is which way I am headed. I also want the 351 but I won an auction for a truck with a 390 in it. Is there much diffuculty dealing with a C6 transmission. As you said I am worried about the size taking away from potential add ons not to forget about headers. Ed
My parts truck has a 390 in it and it fit quite nicely. It was mated to a 3 speed but that should not be a problem. It has the Armstrong (manual) power steering but I think the toyota conversion should work just fine. The FE is one thirsty engine though and parts less available than the 302 but again, the choice is yours. If you want it to , you can fit it. You just have to be creative. Hope this helps
Thanks Bubba. Well if all else fails at least I have several options. I do get a 9" rear and other items from the truck that make it well worth the deal. Ed
Go with the 390/C 6 it will make a very nice ride. With a aluminum intake the 390 will should weigh less than a Y-block. You have plenty of room for headers, P/S and A/C if you want. You can by frame to engineadapters for the FE and C6 tranny.
