I have read on here that the 2002 F250's are now coming with the dana 60 front end instead of the Dana 50 for the previous years. I am trying to id the front end in my truck (2002 f250) to see if it is indeed the dana 60.
Does anyone on here, know how to id it. I have looked under the truck and read all the tags and stickers, but have not found one that said dana 50 or dana 60 on it. the serial number ends in 60, so that would lead me to believe it is the 60. It also looks like a dana 60 from the pics that I have seen. But I have never seen a dana 50 or at least I never paid attention to one.
So, if someone here could help me to id the axle in my truck, I would really appreciate it. I also found on the tag that has the serial number, it has the cust's part number, so I am assuming it is fords part number for this axle. I wonder if there is a place I can find the part number for the dana 50's and dana 60's.
The 2002 trucks do indeed have a Dana 60 front axle. When I bought mine, I was almost certain that it had the 60, but had my fingers crossed... it was confirmed the other day when I took it to the shop to have it re-geared.
The Dana 50 housing looks the same as the D60 from the outside, so it's hard to ID by just looking at it. The D50 holds a narrower carrier, has a smaller ring gear, and uses smaller axles. I'm glad they started using the 60 this year!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 29-Dec-01 AT 10:32 AM (EST)]Thanks guys, to be honest, I was expecting to get a Dana 50. I had done some research before my purchase and most all the ford literature says that the 250 still uses a Dana 50. I was not too concerned. And I bought my truck without a concern. But, when I started reading about the dana 60, it got me going. So, I had to find out.
Going back to my offroading days, the dana 60 is a great axle. So, I really wanted to have one and now I know that I indeed do. Does it make a difference in how I like the truck, well no not really, well actually it does, I love it .
well guys, i just went out and looked at my front axle and couldnt find any of those numbers that you said was on the tag. all it said was 4:10(gear ratio) then it had 2034(no idea) and then below that there was 611(lost here also). im gonna go to the ford-deisel.com and see if i can come up with anything on this. if anybody know anything id appreciate the info. thanks.
The tag is on the passenger side axle tube, mine was white and yellow. It is hard to find, actually if you look from the passenger side wheel well you might be able to see it. Just look midway between the pumpkin and wheel. I had to use a mirror to find the number I referenced above. I dont really know what that number references, but on the ford-diesel site it said that the 248 was the D60.
Once you find the tag, the number will be in small print in one of the bottom corners.
I hope that helps and again I had to borrow one of my wifes little mirrors to actually see the number.
yeeeehaw!:7 i also have 248 on my sticker. so i guess im cool to? the sticker on my tube was on the back side. i thought about peeling it off and putting it in my manual, but its on there pretty good. thanks fer the help.
