I'm finaly going to start a complete restore of my 79, f 250 custom 2wd, as of now i have a 351m that runs fine, but im going to swap it for a 351w thats built up, just wondering what kind of trans. people usually would go for. Im not going to be towing much, more of a show truck but with some power. I think i have a c4 and ive been told the c4's are the common pick for and engine with over 400+ h.p. Any suggestions?
I second F150daniel, the 351M uses a 'big-block' tranny, and if I am not mistaken the c-6 was the only auto tranny available. And they are disputedly one of the best auto's, and can be built up for lots of power. If thats what you got then I would keep it.
There are plenty of small pattern C6's available that will mate with the 351W. Just make sure the valve body and internals are set up for whatever engine you use.
The C6 is a one piece tranny housing. They come with various output tailhousing and shafts.
A C4 is normally only used on small displacement engines, it is not near as strong as the C6.
The biggest problem people have with junkyard tranny swaps is getting one from say behind a 300-6 and running it behind a 351W. The shift points etc are set up all wrong in the valve body "hydraulic brain" and the engine or vehicle just does not seem to drive right. Some transmission shops know what to change but I couldn't say that all of them do.
Why would the shift points be any different in a 300 six and say a 302 which is close enough to a 351W? I cant see why there would be any difference. Only difference would be in the Modulator valve if There is a difference. Modulator and govenor tell it when to shift. Many people have transplated a 302 or 351W in where a 300 was with no problems. I have takin Guts out of a 460 trans and Put into a Small Block Case and Works just fine.
