the owners manual of my 2003 4x2 expedition says to add six quarts of oil i did and it overfilled it a lot could you tell me how much you guys put in the engine is a 5.4
When I change oil, I always change the filter too. Before mounting the filter, I fill it with new oil so there is no time delay for oil delivery when cranking to check for leaks. Using this system, I find that a total of 6 quarts brings the oil up to the full line on the dipstick.
I suggest you should always drain the oil while hot, so all oil comes out and only a trace remains in passageways, valve covers, etc. If very cold in winter, up to a quart could remain inside, stuck to interior surfces. Remove oil filter first, so any suction is relieved and oil can drain back to pan. Make sure none is dripping from pan drain opening, before replugging.

A good tip. But I disagree about draining the oil while the the oil is hot. If you work on the truck when cold, you don't burn yourself and there has been plenty of time for all the oil to drain to the pan. I have never seen more oil come out hot versus cold. When changing tranny fluid on my 89 Dodge van , they said wait two days to make sure the torque converter was completely drained before changing fluid.
