'01 PSD just started to die intermittently a couple days ago. Replaced the fuel filter and air filters -- no change. Once it dies, it restarts easily.
Truck's at the dealer since it's only got 66k on it and they're not showing' any codes, but I haven't even mentioned the word CPS... wanted to see what they would find.
I've read that on the '01 if you don't see the tach move while cranking the starter that means you've got a bad CPS (cmp?). Is that true?
I've heard the same thing but mine doesn't move. I think what they mean is if you do an extened crank it may wiggle a little, but I'm not sure about that either. I changed my CPS once because the tack wasn't moving but even the new one doesn't. I hope this helps.
Just got it back from the dealer and they replaced the cam sensor. They got me for the $100 deductible and replaced it.
Just turned it over several times with the new sensor in it and my tach doesn't budge until the engine fires -- it's a 2001.
Good news is the receipt showed the part cost at $81.60, maybe I can get 'em to sell me a spare for that. My International dealer's a long drive from here.
My truck was also dieing intermittently and it was the cam sensor. It will not store a code unless it sets the SES light. My tach also does not move until the engine actually starts to fire.
I finally replaced mine last night, truck stalled a couple of times in the last week but would fire back up and be ok. I may be crazy but the truck seems to run MUCH better today, like I gave it a tune up or something. Seems to run smoother, boost quicker, and generally feels much more peppy. The CMP shouldn't necessarily cause it to feel lethargic but it does feel like a different truck today.
Anyone else notice this kind of change after replacing the CMP??

I checked the local Schucks in Washington and they quoted me $218.99 for the CPS and two days to get one. When I mentioned that I thought that was above dealer cost, I was informed that they don't try to beat dealer cost, just other parts retailers.
Napa says list is ~$175 and my cost would be $128.99. I wonder if the $81.60 is the cost to the dealer.
I just bought one on Ebay for $81.00. Where I live, getting stranded would not be a good thing.

The $81.60 was the cost of the Camshaft Position Sensor, that is different than the Crankshaft Position Sensor....
If you have a local International dealer, see what their prices are for a CPS. I buy mine there and save a good $80-$90. Any parts you can buy from International will usaully be a lot cheaper. I hope this helps.
Im kinda confused right now ??............. CPS and CMP which one is the troublesome sucker? ......... I recently changed my CPS because my truck was running a bit loud and hard to start, I deffinitely noticed an immediate difference in noise level and engine performance......... But I dont even know where the CMP is and what effects it has on the vehicle when malfunctioning.
