i tested my 2002 PSD for fuel mileage this last weak and got a very disapointing 13.5 mpg. the truck is an automatic and is stock. i also didn't drive it hard. has anyone else had this problem and is their something i can do to help it
Calculate the mpg by hand, dont go by the trip computer. Unsure where you live, cold weather will also have a negative effect on your mpg. Is this calculation a combo of city and highway, or just highway?

i live in central indiana and the calculation was based on city and high way driving. i used and calculator to divide gallons used to fill up tank vers the miles drove on the last tank according to the trip meter
You always get worse milage in the winter. Cold weather takes it down and winterized fuel brings it down too. I only get about 12mpg in the winter.. I would say what you're seeing is normal.
i talked to a friend of mine and he was telling me about his dads 02 that did the same thing but it was related to some kind of fuel control unit that was bad anyone heard anything like this
I have a 2003 3.73 crew cab long bed. I get about 15.4 before cold hit in december live out side chicago IL. Talked with a designer from IH and he said I should be getting 20mpg. Said I need to bring to ford and have computer reprogramed.? Looking for good dealer outside Chicago area as my selling dealer keeps damaging my truck when I bring it in for repairs. Zimmerman Ford ST. Charles IL the worst dealer ever.
My brother in law has a 2000 F250 CC SB with canopy and I have a 2000 F350 SC LB. Less than 2 inches difference in overall length and maybe 300 lbs difference in weight, yet I get close to 18 on the hiway at 65-70 and the best he has ever gotten is 15 and I know I drive more agressively than he. Both are automatics with 3.73's. I have 33 x 12.50's - he has had the same mileage with both the stock tires and some 285's.
After he drove mine he said I have a lot more power than he does also.
Beats me as to why. He refuses to get a chip/tuner til 100k miles so he doesn't void his warranty.
With my 2001 Extended cab long box 4x4, i've been getting 20.5mpg when driving nice, and 16.5mpg when driving aggresive. This is with a Superchips 1705 on the lowest hp rating. I have an older ('97) E350 Powerstroke that has always gotten 13mpg no matter how you drive it.
I just drove from MPLS to Des Moines this past weekend.
Outside temp was around 50*, and I was running about
2 hours late. Running 80mph the whole way & I got 16.5.
If I run between 65 - 70 I see 20-23.
Cheers
Winterized fuel definitely affects mileage, I notice it when going to montana I lose about 1.5-2 MPG. If I drive under 2000 rpm I get about 17-17.5 MPG. If I drive above that 2000 RPM I get about 16. The best I got was 19.5, but that has happend only once, and I don't drive that way often.
It's the winter fuel and you'll see an increase come back this summer. Winter fuel is a mixture of #1 and #2 diesel, #1 will not produce as many BTU's compared to #2 even though I think #1 has a higher cetane rating. Adding a cetane booster helps a little if it increases the #2 cetane rating, but probably not very noticable. In the winter the additives are more important for helping the gel temp. and for lubricating the injectors. I'm sure if I'm wrong someone will come on with better info. I hope this helps.
I think I may have posted this before...can't remember. I had the same problem; thought it might be bad fuel or just winter fuel. I changed all filters and my fueling station. No luck. Then I read from another forum that by disconnecting the batteries (and resetting the computer) that would help. I thought it was a bit odd, but tried it anyway.
MPG in my 2002 6speed, 3.73 CC with a 4" exhaust went from 13-14 up to it's normal 17.4 or so. Both indicated and measured are about the same.
Dunno why it worked.
Cetane booster will not improve mileage, it will however make the fuel ignite easier, and therefore easier to start when the weather is cold. Winterized diesel is as mentioned lower in BTU's than normal #2 diesel. If you were in a really cold place and all they sold was #1 diesel, you'd notice even lower mileage. Altitude really doesn't affect mileage much because we have turbos which puts nearly the same amount of air into the cylinders every time regardless of your altitude.
I would like to know more about the fuel processor that was mentioned before. I've gotten between 12.5 and 14 mpg since it was brand new, i now have 22000 miles on mine. Its always sucked, I've just gotten used to it. Would be nice to know if something was wrong. I use the Predator tuner now and the miles havn't changed at all. Some say it is supposed to get better with the tuner, but I wouln't be able to tell cause I'm unable to drive conservatively on the upper settings
