Just returned from dealer. Got'em stymied. Can't figure where the thumping noise in steering wheel is coming from during sharp low speed turns. They first said it was telegraphing from the rear, something about binding limited slip gears. Said there's a "letter" out about it. He'll change out the rear lube oil, that should fix it. I said, "it's not equipped with Limited Slip". OOPS!!. Had another felow drive it. Said yup, sure is doing it. Have to bring it back and leave it so we can "work on it".
Well, I searched back on this forum 10 pages and can't find any reference to it. Anybody out there heard of the problem?? Seems to occur with each revolution of tires. They checked entire front end and couldn't find anything loose. Only 10K miles!
I have a 2001 F250, V10, 4x4, with a camper package. About 80% of the time I start to move from a spot that I have been at for hours, my truck also endures a thump from the front end. From what I can tell something is binding only for that short period from starting point to about 20 or 30 feet. I don't know if this is the same as you are experiencing. I am going to request the dealer look at it, but I am not pleased with the servic manager at the dealer where I purchased my truck. I will update when I have any further info.
Thumping Turns? Had them for about the first 10,000 miles. Now have 20,000, and don't remember the last time I heard them. Actually the last time I heard them was immediately after using my 4 wheel drive, so I associate the feeling with 4 wheel drive. Asked dealer, they were clueless, got nowhere, ya know I'm a woman, so I must be confused. Anyway, the thumping had stopped for a while, then I had it again for a short while after the 4 wheel drive use. A local general mechanic said he had the same problem with his truck but said "don't worry, the thumping will go after 10,000 miles, it's not dangerous". From what I can tell he was right.
Thanks folks. I get real concerned when a person says don't worry about it, it's harmless and will go away. Problem is, if they can't tell you what caused it, how do they know it's not a problem? Anyhoo, I'm going to take it back and let them have another shot at it. If nothing else, it gets noted in the history of the truck and I can always go after the blue oval folks if it gives me problems much later. I've got the thumping when turning all the time, not just after 4X4 use. It occurrs on very tight turns when close to the maximun radius. (or is that minimum radius?) If the "10,000 mile thumping rule" is true, it should cease in about 600 miles!! Safe roads to you!!
Might be an issue with one of your front hubs. Just for G/G, check to make sure they aren't "locked". I had the left-front hub on my '00 replaced with less than 2000 miles on the truck.
Problem solved. Just got my SD back from the shop. They had it for 8 days. I went to pick it up and they said they couldn't duplicate the thunping noise, and did nothing! (this, after two techs did expierence the noise and pulsing during my first visits in Nov.) They further stated that the noise they heard was "normal front 4X4 U joint chatter"!! I said, really?? Then why don't the other SD PSD's I've driven have "normal front 4X4 U Joint chatter"?? To which, they had no response. OK, enough of this Sh**. Took the service manager for a ride. Noise was gone, surprised the hell out of me. So they did do something. So I put the truck in 4X4 high and drove it for a minute, then tried to take it out of 4X4, nothing happened. Both hubs were frozen engaged. Manager said, we'll fix it in a couple of days. They if fact, wound up replaced both hubs!!. Just gotta hang in there!!
He did say the original problem I described was caused by only one of the hubs failing to completely release. Sure is smooth now. Didn't expect a truck with less then 10,000 miles to have such a problem. Cause-Failure to exercise the 4X4???
I got so much thumpin' going on under my truck, I'd swear someone's living under my truck!
Love the ride though!
As long as they keep it quite under there most of the time, I'm happy.
It pays to have good tenants!
