I am installing a spal aftermarked power window and power lock kit. The diagrams show that you hook the power sorce to the battery. I have installed numerous cd players in my time however I am wondering how I should hook these up correctly. I found a "hot" wire that is hot even when the truck is off. I am worried that if I use this wire the trucks battery will drain or I might burn up the motors. I am also unsure what the wire goes to so I am worried to tap into it. If I run my own wire directly off the battery will that work okay? Can somone please help me with this.
Even If I have no idea what it is connected to. There are a couple wires that I have tested as hot when the car is off. Will it cause any problems to splice into them? For example say I splice into the ignition wire, is it going to draw power away from the ignition? Also, If I have illuminated switches that need a light wire what color is the FORD Light wire?
Andy, power windows use a motor so they'll draw some current. While you can tap into any constant-on 12V wire inside, you may draw too much current through that circuit and blow the fuse. Shouldn't hurt anything other than the fuse but it will get old real fast! That's probably why the mfg of your kit says to run it to the battery separately. That way you are not taxing an existing circuit.
I'm not sure what the color code on the gauge lighting wiring is but that's the circuit you want for the illumination part of it. It shouldn't hurt anything to tap into that circuit, the current draw is very low.
I have gotten some help on here about my power window and lock kit that I am installing however, I am still a little confused as to what I need to do. Right now I am looking for a picture of the fuse box or a diagram that tells me about it. People have told me that there is a 12v connection on the fuse box. Where is it?
I agree. Run off the battery to a add-on fuse(put the fuse near the battery). Then run the fused wire into the cab where you need it. If you run a 10 guage wire with a 30 amp fuse, you should have plenty of power to run both windows at the same time.
I have successfully installed my lock kit. I chose to splice into the yellow constant wire on the ignition. My locks are working properly and I hope they stay that way.
My next project is to get the power windows installed and a security alarm system. I am planning on running one wire directly off the battery for these two components. Does any one think that it would be a bad idea to use one wire for these two devices or should I run two seperate wires?

Andy, you should be OK on the door locks. On the other items, if it were me I'd run seperate feeds as those are both important circuits. If either system blows its fuse the other system will still be up.
