Question wierd steering problem

i've got an issue with my '93 f150. when turning the steering wheel all the way to the right, the drivers side front will rise about 2 inches, then go back down when you turn to the left. occasionally something will clunk on the passengers side, as well. any ideas?

The height change is normal. Not sure about the clunk. When you turn, the tires tip while they turn side to side. When tipping like that, the truck sits up on the corner of the tire, thus causing a height change. Mine does this too. When doing an alignment you have to steer the steering left and right to measure caster. It was unnerving to have the truck moving around like that while up on the rack! Especially when the fat tires have less than 5" of extra room to sit on. Clunk could be the tire skidding across the pavement, but it could also be loose ball joints, tie rods, or a number of other things. Hope this helps

By the way, welcome to FTE!

Check the rivets holding the front crossmember to the frame (the one that supports the engine and axles). These are known to loosen. The ones in my '95 were found to be loose, and would allow the crossmember to move about 1/4" when turning. Having it welded solidly to the frame solved my clunking problem.

mrwizard, thx for the help; will check the rivets.

never noticed a vehicle tipping like that before, but natewoz's explanation is logical.
