I just finised installing all new steering linkage, radius arm bushing etc. After this was complete had my wife turn the steering wheel all the way to one side when power steering fluid began to gush from the filler tank! Not only that it also damn near yanked out the brake line from the body to the caliper!
I suspect that I should have centered the steering wheel before insalling the new linkage? Or maybe the linkage is adjusted out too far and is allowing the wheels to swing out too much?
I forget what it is, but there is something that will make that happen, happened to me once. Think it may be when you screw with the steering while the truck isn't running, but i forget. I just filled it up and that was that.
Thanks for the input No_BS,
I guess you mean the fluid spewing? Would that also be my brakeline problem? I have not had a chance to get back to adjusting the linkage so I have not corrected it.
Yea, you're gonna spew fluid all over if you turn the wheels without the pump running.
Is this a 2wd or 4wd? What year?? I'm having a hard time seeeing how a brake line could be stretched if nothing other than steering linkage was changed. I mean, the alignment must be WAAAYYYY off or something. Even if the alignment was way off I'm having a hard time seeing how the brake line could get stretched.
Thanks SoCal and 77'F-150 for the input, I sure appreciate the help,
Its a 1972 2wd 3/4 ton with a 360, and I did remove the radius arms and the coil springs to replace the radius arm bushings. As for the stop bolt , I am not sure what that is and where it is located?
I put It back together just the way it came apart. I did have the axles on jacks and the tires off when this happened could this have caused the brakeline problem? I have not been able to get back to it this week, will give it a shot Sat.
Well I got the tires back on and let it off the jacks. That solved the brake line problem! I guess the wheel assm. was sagging so much as to cause tension on the brake lines. The steering fluid is fine now that I run the engine while I turn the wheel. Thanks for the help. now its off to the the alignment shop.
I had my truck towed last summer and the tow driver turned the steering wheel with the engine stopped and it poped the top off the power steering reservoir. He tried to tell me that the truck had a leak in the power steering line...wrong...
