DS Door handle inop

Recently my door hanle from the exterior side has lost all tension. I've been told that the spring has broken. This has resulted in multiple problems starting with simple opening and closing, to my door not locking or unlocking, and finally to the breakdown of my power lock system. The power locks were covered under warranty, but the spring and latch assembly were not. I refuse to pay the dealership for this kind of work.

Could anyone tell me which parts I will need in order to fix this on my own? Also some advise and/or shortcuts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

hello john and welcome to FTE

im pretty sure your problem is not with the spring on the latch. it seems to me that your linkage has come off the handle mechanism, there's a plastic clip thats attached to the handle which in turn is connected to the linkage. you see, if the spring was broken to the handle, it just wouldnt return but you would still be able to open the door. take your door panel off and look inside and you will see two steel rods about the middle of the door, one goes to the lock mechanism and the other goes to the handle mechanism. follow the one that goes to the handle and check and see if its attached. hope this helps...good luck

i appreciate your response...i will definitely check those areas once time permits. another note to add to the situation is that the door does open from the outside only if the lock is in the unlocked position. which is a challenge only because it will rarely unlock with the key. even then there is zero tension behind the handle. it flaps around in the wind when i drive. pretty annoying...still sound like the linkage? if so will i be able to get this part, or do i have to buy the whole latch/rod assembly? thanks

well yes, the door will open with the door unlocked, i understand that, not sure what you are trying to say? after some thinking, you do probably have a broken spring as well. my bro-in-law has a jeep with the same problem, the door handle just flaps and after removing the door panel the linkage was disconnected and the spring was broken as well. try spraying some lithium grease into the keyway and work the key left to right. i have found that the casing around the tumbler has a tendency to bind making the pins in the keyway to stick. well i hope this helps.
