I have been having a problem with my motor popping when you give it gas, I thought maybe carb, timing, but after checking all that, I am now leaning towards a collapsed lifter, or bad cam. Been also getting a noise from the motor, but not so much a rod sound, a little higher in sound, maybe pushrod tapping.
no,
mine started out as a light tap, but then as gotten alittle more noisy and more consistent. When the popping started I could here the noise thru the pipes. I had new heads put on, but did not change the cam, I think the new valve springs might have been too much for old lifters. Yours does sound like a weak lifter.
Now i got a non stock cam (RV cam from Comp), is there any recommendations as far as just swappin a set of lifters and leavin the cam sit? The cam is about 2 years old and so are the lifters, valvetrain came with the new long block. Let me know. Appreciate it
2 year old cam, should get more life than that, I would check the lifters, and they can be replaced with out replacing cam. I would use a different brand lifter next time around. I am currently installing a crane set up, I had a comp last time around. I am hoping the crane is a little better in quality. But another consideration, a set of lifters will run you about 100 bucks, for a few bucks more you could go new cam to boot. After you change your oil, does your oil pressure come up? I am beginning to wonder if oil pump is losing prime.
Right after I change the oil the pressure is great. Ive been runnin Castrol Syntec synthetic ever since I broke the new motor in. The tappin is pretty bad right after a change for a couple weeks then settles down as the oil gets dirtier. Im thinkin the new oil flushes out the dirt thats holding hydraulic pressure in the lifters.
The synthetic may be too thin, I would try 5w30 wieght oil next go around to see if maybe that is the problem, but sounds definitely lifters, I found some great stuff in Jegs, that's where my cam is coming from.
I usually run 10w40 syntec in it when i was back home but they dont sell the stuff in Hawaii so i switched to 10w30 for one change and that made it tap more so this past time I put in 20w50 in there. quieted it down a hair but not much. Im thinkin a set of lifters is in order. Just wanted to make sure it was that and not a bad rocker or bent pushrod. I dont really goose the motor much, unless im offroadin and the tires are spinnin. I try to take care of it. The rebuilt and bored over motor is startin to puff a little blue smoke and its only got about 35000 miles on it.Im thinkin its the rings since its bored out and has stock pistons and all.
I agree on the lifters, when they put mine back together, the guy put a crank kit, and new heads but used an older cam and lifters, I think that the new valve springs were too much for used lifters. As for blue smoke, I would think valve seals if it is limited to start up, or long idle. If it is constant faint, then yes rings, but more likely in the top end.
long idle definitely and start up if i aint run it in a long time. I just got back from deployment and started it up and it puffed quite a bit from the start up. Also, when I got back from MOS school and fired it up when it was still back home it puffed for a good 5 minutes
At idle there is not as much friction, friction making heat may swell the seals a bit and seal them, just theory. The synthetic maybe giving your seals a hard time, lifters, valve seals? Try some thick standard oil it may help the lifters, and be thick enough to not get by the valve seals.
