Have 83 F350 I got underneath it yesterday to put a solinoid on the starter. Checking stuff out found out my passebger side front axle moves in and out about 1" and a half. That to me should not be.What could be the problem if any. And maybe this will cure my clunking noise. (manule hubs)
I take it you have one of the ttb F350s. That does seem a bit much. Have you or anyone else ever been in the diff? It sounds like the c-clip has been left off and the spring trick wasn't done.
TTB= Twin Traction Beam, It's Ford's early style of IFS. I believe it wasn't til 85 when they went back to the solid D60 in the F350's. If the play is in the Hub end of the axle. I'd check the needle bearings in the spindle. They wear out easy and 99% of the time if any frontend work been done to a truck they don't know about the bearing and don't replace them which will allow the axle to have play in it.
Twin traction beam is an axle design used by Ford on a type if independent front suspension from 1980-96 on 4x4 F150, Broncos, Rangers, Broncon II, F250 and a few years of F350. Most F350 years have a monobeam. In the full sized trucks the used either TTB Dana44, TTB Dana 44HD or TTB Dana 50.
If you are lucky, you will have a MonoBeam Dana 60. The F350 is too much truck for even the Dana 50 IMHO.
The Axle housing is in two pieces and with each half functioning around a pivot bolt.
Texasquad is right about the bearings. An inch and a half is a lot of play though.
Thanks for the replies I will check it out. Talking with my neighbor he says he will help me pull the front axles, says it is a piece of cake. I wanted to change the universal joints because of a clunking. Maybe the axel moving is my clunking. My neighbor says he can do it with his eyes closed LOL. Used to be a mechanic has a bad back so I don't like to bother him to much. He says anytime he can help just ask seeing how I or my son plow his driveway. I told him I'll do the work just tell me how I figure its the only way I'm gonna learn. And with your help I will save alot of money I hope.

I'm not gonna lie to you guys you have me totally lost on the TTB Dana44, TTB Dana 44HD or TTB Dana 50 ,MonoBeam Dana 60. How can I tell what I have. This stuff is way over my head. Thats why I talked to my neighbor. Always willing to learn though. Thanks again
That looks like mine. Looking at the picture I guess what I'm talking about is actually the axle shaft(?) that is inside the axle housing that moves in an out.
