In general, how much would it cost to change from 3.55 to 4.10? Would it cost more for 4.56? This would be, in general, how much to pay someone to do it. I know people charge different prices, but we wanted to get a ballpark. Thanks.
Which axle are you going to change the gears in? There is a difference in the carrier that the ring bolts to. Dana 60's go from low 3's to 4.10 so you could use the existing carrier for the 4.10 gears but will need another one for 4.56 gears.
Depends on if the truck is 4 wheel drive or not. If it is you will have to change both front and rear to make it work correctly.
Ok, I just saw your other post. I don't think there is a such thing as a Dana 72, but looking at the year and model of your truck you should have a Visteon rear axle. I am not sure of the size or model. Which pretty much go hand in hand. I think it may be a 10.25

I can answer your question. Figure about $700 for on axle, $1400 for two. I bought new 4.10 gears through Reider Racing (Preceision Gears) and a Master Overhaul kit for both the Front and rear differentials. The cost was at $730.00. At a local shop (I checked w/a couple and they were the same) it cost me $700 to have the gears in both differentials changed. Now, I could have saved some money if I would have used a basic install kit, instead of an overhaul kit; but I felt since they were changing the gears, I might was well have all the parts changed. I also bought synthetic fluid for both differentials.
Randy's http://www.ring-pinion.com quoted me $884 for the gears,new carrier and a Detroit locker for my 96 F150 4X4. Thats a 8.8 rear and a Dana 44 front.
I will go with 4.10's. The truck is a daily driver in the winter and when it rains and I can't ride the bike. I am not a serious rock climbin, mud racein, type.
Yea I'm probably going that route too. I was going to go 4.56's
but mine is a daily driver too. I pull a 14' trailer and my atv's when I go to Pismo beach, ( out in the sand dunes) but thats about it. No hard core off road especialy with a x cab long bed!!!
thanks Commo
