Hi new to the site but not to SD
wondering if anyone has had a front end sqeak (loud )in a 2000 SD
7.3, when going over a large bump. Especially when it is cold out, it is not noticeable when warm. Sounds like it is coming from the front springs but not sure. Checked all of the fittings in the front
end found nothing. Appreciated any help and am glad I found this
site lots of great info here
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-Jan-02 AT 02:55 PM (EST)]yes, my 2000 Excursion makes the same noise. It is being checked out as we speak. If no one else does, I'll update you in tomorrow.
My truck just started doing this on the left side. Alot of guys are finding that it is the sway bar link bushings and/or loose link bolts. That's what I am going to check first.
abendx,
Maybe you need a remote camera mounted on the front of that truck so you can see all those small ch*vys before you run over them, but then I guess you wouldn't be having any more fun. It would eliminate your squeaks though
There is a TSB for this, the number is 13148 and the bulletin sequence number is 609. I'm not sure what the problem is or the fix but I sent off for more info. I will post as soon as I find out unless someone beats me to it.
I had the same problem, and had the TSB work done on my truck. If I remember correctly, it's adding new isolators between the leafs. I'm also pretty sure they fell off at some point in time. I don't remember what it looked like after the dealer did the TSB, but there were no isolators there when I installed the leveling kit 2 weeks ago.

So, Les and the boys, that is exactly what I was thinking. I can even see evidence of sway bar movement on the bar itself due to wear marks. But what does the technical jerk do?? He changes my upper and lower ball joints. I will see tomorrow morning if this did the trick. He "ran" BOTH TSB's for front end noise and sway bar noise and stated that neither of those were the culprit. We'll see..... :-X23
Daggum kid was right!! The noise is gone. Musta been them ball joints.
The noise was most prevelant when hitting bumps that would cause the front springs to extend say maybe 2-3 inches. It wouldn't do it on smaller bumps nor did I notice/feel any clunking that I usually associate with worn ball joints.
It was 28 degrees out this morning when I took my son to school, I made sure I hit all the bumps that I know would cause that sound. No such luck ,the kid who looked like he graduated junior high school the same year my truck was made, fixed it.
As you found out monsta, the stock ball joints are junk also. I don't think Ford has put a decent balljoint on a truck since the 70's. Even the IFS had bad balljoints, I know, I replaced them on two previous truck I had.
