Hey i'm putting a 302 into my '66 that has a 170 in it now. Whats the deal with the trany? Do i have to swap it out too? I thought the trans was the same in both but the shift linkage of the two is different.
it there a adapter plate or something i have to buy to make my trans work??
The transmission from the 6 cylinder and the V8 is different. The 6 cylinder has lower gearing and is weaker. Also, the 6 cylinder adaptor is shorter than the V8 to accomidate for the longer engine. If you try to use the 6 cyl trans, the engine mount stands will be further back than stock and you will have to cut into the firewall for clearance.
There are 3 different transmissions and 3 different adaptors for the Bronco.
HEF- 6 cylinder, short transmission case and short adaptor
RAN- V8 light duty, short case (same as the 6 cyl), and mid length
adaptor, 8 7/8" approx
RAT- V8 heavy duty, long case, and long adaptor, 9 3/8"
You need to use the matching transmission, adaptor and adaptor shaft for it to mate up properly.
can i use the RAN- V8 light duty, mid length
adaptor, 8 7/8" approx with the HEF- 6 cylinder, short transmission case to make the engiene mount up where it is suposed to be in the engine compartment and not cut up the fire wall.
Or dose it all have to be changed?
I don't plan on cutting my fire wall. i want to eventuly get a nv4500 trans set up. So i want to mount the 302 in the right spot.
The HEF and the RAN case are actually the same. The transmission output shaft is what keeps them from directly interchanging. So, by using a HEF case with the RAN adaptor, you would need to swap to the RAN output shaft and adaptor shaft. And the RAN output shaft will only accept RAN transmission gears, so you're essentially using a RAN transmission.
If you are buying a V8 conversion kit for the frame mounts, they will tell you where the proper stock location to weld them in.
