A year ago I bought a 86 F150 Extended cab long box and it is a good work horse. The past few days I have had to drive it for the business and putting the fuel through it got exspencive to say the least. It has a HO351 with a C6 tranny and four wheel drive. As close as I can tell the front tranny seal leaks and my son tells me that the truck of course is sweating horsepower. I wish to pull the tranny to correct the situation but am wondering if there is an overdrive tranny that can serve me well. From what I have heard the first OD installations were weak at best. Should I be content with the C6 and know that I have the power to hall at all times or is there something worth taking note of?
The C-6 trans is a very fine piece. I would simply rebuild it and know that it will serve you well no matter what you pull with the truck. Thats just my opinion of course... good luck BigGene
Maybe you want to consider an over/underdrive unit from Pacific Gear or Gear Vendors. I have heard positive things about them. They are expensive, about $2500.00 or more installed.
Thanks for the responces on my post. I agree that the C6 is the work horse tranny and that for hauling it is the way to go. It is just that when traversing long distance the truck requires a lot of fuel. I will be getting the seal repaced and be careful how and when the truck is used in the business. I've driven the other trucks in the past but this one I enjoy driving the most. Again thanks for the time and attention.
