Damndest thing ive seen..... i was playin a lil bit and as usual i got to wheel hopping, well i turn the next turn and my rear end was makin a awful noise from the passenger side. so i stopped, jacked it up checked both axle bearings in the back, both tight. i got back in the truck, drove it down to my garage and on the way down it never made a noise or anything. Any ideas what happened?? i reckon ill drive it till it happens again or goes on me, which ever comes first, if it goes i got a backup soo im prepared for it.
popping, just when im turning, i got a buddy with an 86 6.9 diesel with the same problem, he has drove it like that for a while and was told it was the locker?
If you don't have a locker pull the rear diff cover and check the spider gears and side gears. I just had similar problem with my jeep wrangler, pulled the diff cover and the gears were shot. Easy fix. Just an idea?!
Good luck
Sounds like what happened to me when I was power braking my '66 F-100 4-sp.
Heard a loud "pop". Stopped to check it out... found nothing. Drove it for a few days w/ no problems, but then suddenly heard another "pop" and the rear was obviously shot. Tore it down and found that some teeth were broke off of the pinion gear.
I think that one tooth broke off at first, then the broke tooth got caught in the gears later on and finished the job.
I poured some limited slip additive in it tonight gonna drive it till i can get it backed in the garage. I have a question, me and dad had a dissagreement, he says that truck didnt come out with lockers, i always thought they did, i could be wrong if i am ill admit it to him.
96-5spd302,
Sounds like you busted the spider gears, I did the same thing a few years ago. When that happened I tried the limited slip additive too, hoping that it would do the trick, but it didn't, that was just wishful thinking. It will just get worse the more you drive on it.
As far as differentials from factory go, I don't know of any actual lockers from factory, they aren't very streetable, just limited slip differentials.
