Came home from the Bird Dog Field Trials today and I think we killed the f-150. Long Story. Had to pull the two horse trailer home with my truck. Had only one horse in the back so I thought I might check out the readings on the pyro while ol'gray was under load. Stop and go, averaged between 6 and 9. What got my attention was when we got on a long stretch, 8 miles, the pyro went up to 9 and 10 and stayed around that mark at about 60 to 65 miles an hour. I'm concerned about that luxery liner horse trailer I'll be pulling to New Orleans next month. When they replaced the PCM, they replaced the chip in it also and told me that it was a little hotter chip. Truck runs great and the power is there. The Pyro readings are what concerns me and if it's something I need to worry about. I know 1250 is not good and if I didn't get my foot out of it, it would have gotten there easily. I think I can get the guys who put the chip in to dial it down but I'd like to get some advice from my bud's here first.
Hi, Bubba!
It's actually quite a ways from 900* to 1250*, and 1250* wouldn't kill you anyway. You've got the right stuff on your truck to handle it, so cruising at 1250* for hours wouldn't hurt you. Even temporary "visits" into the 1300*+ territory aren't fatal.
You'll likely find that once you get the larger trailer on the back, you'll find a speed/rpm combination that works well for you. I know it sounds backwards, but going slightly faster is quite often cooler, since you're sucking more air. If all else fails, drop 'er out of OD and run in 3rd.
Of course, if getting the chip reflashed is cheap and easy, you could always "detune" down to a "tow" chip for the trip, and kick it up a notch once you get back.
Scott.
Thanks Quad, kind of worried me there for a minute. Don't want to burn up nothing. Been working on the better half's truck. Pulled the air filter off the Triton. Busted air filter! No telling how long. I think the problem is it sucked in a bunch of dirt. Can you say$? I've heard that the injector system on her 150 can be cleaned. Think Dale has a Tymar for her?
As far as EGT's go, there's a big grey area as to how much is too much. I've run mine at 1300 for several minutes with no damage. Swamp Donkey has run his all day at 1250 with no trouble. One friend of mine was pullng his trailer through BC, and got into a "dogfight" with a Dodge, who was also pulling a trailer. By the time my buddy got to the top of the hill, his EGT's were over 1500*F without damage.
I'll give Dale a call on Monday. I won't be going any place. In the saddle for six hours get's ya sore on the back side! Thanks for the info on the EGT's Scott.
When i was on my test drive after getting injectors, with Dave from swamps diesel peformance, i let off the throttle at 1250 and he said what r u doing? I was like um...i hit 1250. He laughed at me. He is running 350cc injectors and no pyro gauge, truck runs like you would not believe. He did explain to me that if you do hit 1300, 1400, or 1500 for a brief time, 5 seconds to 15 seconds, maybe longer, you shouldnt do any harm. I know some Duram@x guys that run 1600 all day long, everytime they put there foot into the throttle.
On Edit: Horsecop, is your pyro pre or post turbo?
I think you'll find that your cruise EGT's really won't change that much with the bigger trailer.
With #4-6000 on my flatbed it will cruise around 850-900 at highway speeds. With the #11,000 travel trailer on the same cruise it will go 900-1000. Of course with the big trailer on it will blow right through 1400 on a grade if I'm not paying attention to what the cruise control is doing.
Spent 10 straight hours last fourth of July weekend between 1000-1400 dragging the TT across Kansas at 75mph.
Yes, we're still talking about how big. I was all about some 235's till you got your 200's, now I'm thinking smaller my be better.
I still cant decide on a turbo either. The H2 is a known commodity, but the big ball bearings (gt40, gt42) are getting very close now, plus I'll be able to get a GTP38-R with a 1.15 exhaust housing and the ported shroud intake for like $700 less than the H2E.
