Converter clutch eror [E4OD]

This is the consistent code I keep getting. Have repl dist cap and rotor, ign module, egr valve, pcv valve, spk wires and fuel filter.

Runs great after warm up, but hesitates and sputters alot driving, loses alot of power with even a little hill. Goingf to check fuel pressure tomorrow, butr would appreciate any suggestions

The code seems to point to the transmission torque converter. If the clutch were slipping baddly or having problem engaging you might lose power and hesitate. But I would think by that point your tranny would be in pretty bad shape. The symptoms don't sounds like a torque converter problem but more like the things you have already checked.

I might wonder if the computer was getting bad signals from the speed sensor or tranny. That would cause the tranny to shift at the wrong times and maybe even upset the TC lockup.

If it was me I would suspect the filter(you changed that), and the other stuff you also changed. next I would suspect maybe bad fuel, clogged injectors, a vacuum leak(either a hose is off or the manifold gasket is leaking), spark plugs, timing, really dirty air filter, bad ignition coil.

Tell us more about the truck. What engine, how many miles. Did you have gradual symptoms or did this happen all of a sudden?

I had the same problem(in a chebby) as you and it was caused by a load of really bad gas which clogged my filter. Since your filter was changed, I would lean to injectors if I knew it was bad gas. Other wise check the other stuff.

That tranny code bothers me, so check things that affect the tranny too. Wild guess if it isn't an engine problem is one of the sensors on the tranny is screwed up or you have a bad connection to the computer.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

It is a '90 F150, 200K miles, I-6. I replaced the air and breather filters as part of the overall tune-up I was doing. I also cleaned the IACV and the throttle body. I forgot to mention those with the post above. I don't think it is the fuel injectors, because I pulled plugs and they all looked great. I didn't even bother replacing them. Also, once it warms up it idles great, hard to keep running when first started though.

After I cleaned the throttle body, it ran better than it has since I bought it. 2 days later it went all to hell, like a cylinder wasn't firing or it was starving for air. It was after that that I repl the ign module [ I pulled the old one to get it tested, but broke it ] I have techron fi clnr in both tanks with gas from a place I usually buy from. I am thinking timing or fuel pressure. I also will run down vac lines and make sure I didn't pull something and forget to hook it up.

I had been getting 49 and 59 coides indicating shift errorsbut I think this was as a result of an engine defect affecting the transmission shifts.

More info

I channged trans fluid and filter. Old fluid was pretty nasty, but it was only about 10K miles old. Done some medium towing since then , but not enough to foul up the fluid so fast.

After I changed fluid and filter, I zeroed out the codes and drove it a few miles. It still sputtter and hesitated, and I had to flutter the throttle w/ the accelerated to get it moving It actually accelerated when I let off the pedal rather than on the way down. When I got back, it idled great, and I could manually open the throttle and RPM s went up great with practically no detectable hesitation. I checked the code and still have the 62/Clutch converter error
