Question Pebbles in the O2 sensor

This is the second time I've changed the O2 sensor in 6-10 months and again there are pebbles in the sensor. Why?

I wasn't totally clear but it might not make a diiference. I 1st changed the sensor without knowing it's history. A few months later, I replaced the exhaust & cat, kept the sensor. Cat is less than a year old. I can't recall if the material inside but I shall inquire. Any other possiblilties, besides somhowe inhaling them? Come to think of it, all pebbles are same tone (light tannish). Thanks for the reply.

Nope its probly comming from the cat. if you were inhaling them your motor would be trash, valve broblems, smoking, burning oil, stuff like that. so i would think its just the cat. how many are there? i know my 87 had two, the first one systryoyed itself somehow, and there was all kinds of pepbles and chunks in the second cat wich plugged the second on up pretty tight, did you replace them all?

Just one cat, stayed with stock style, fat & long. I think I'll let the new O2 sit for a month, then check it. If the pebbles appear, I believe the cat is warrantied (that would be nice).

How would particles from the cat get upstream to the O2 sensor?

Beats me. I reckon there must be some serious back pressure, but I've been given no signs of trouble relative to that. If it's throwing pebbles forward, most of those pebbles would have to return to the cat, producing (in my mind) a sort of sand blasting effect in the cat.

The only thing that is wrong with the truck is a typical 'don't like to start when hot'.

my cats on the lincoln chunked apart and clogged the muffler to the point the exhaust pretty much disconnected itself right behind the last 2 cats (it has 4). if you don't have emission testing i'd just punch the cats out

Sometimes ya gotta make assumptions when you're not given all the facts. I appreciate the help/ideas. Is there any ceramic/porcelain material in a O2 sensor when it's made? Oh yeah, I still have it. Time for an exploratory.

Case solved. Inside the sensor housing, surronding the sensor itself, is a ring of material (ceramic-like), that breaks up, probably due to excessive heat. While these pieces were in the slotted metal housing, I only saw what resembled sand-like pebbles. I guess most sensors go bad before the material breaks up, or nobody's noticed it before. I am a wiser man. Now I need to fix the no start when hot problem. Thanx to all for the help.
