6-Speed V-S Automatic?
I am new to this Board, and have learned a lot by lurking in the shadows and listening. I have decided to jump in! I am planning to purchase a 2002 F-250 SD SC 4X4 V-10 long bed. I have a 1990 F-250 HD
460 V-8 5 speed. Best truck I have ever owned! It is getting a little long in the tooth, and I need to know if the automatic overdrive tranny
will last 12+ years, like my 1990? Assuming proper maintenance, do they hold up? The 6 speed sounds like a great idea! Which has the edge for durability? Thanks!

Longhunter7 out!
THE ONLY REASON I HAVE THE AUTO TRANS IS THAT MY WIFE DRIVES THE TRUCK DURING THE WEEK.
WEVE EXPERIENCED NO TRANS PROBLEMS IN 45000 MILES BUT I WOULD OPT FOR THE MANUAL IN A HEARTBEAT. MANUALS ARE GENERALLY SIMPLER IN DESIGN WITH LESS MOVING PARTS AND STONGER IN THE LONG HAUL AS THEY DONT DEPEND ON FLUIDS TORQUE CONVERTERS, ETC. FOR TRANSMITTING POWER.
I HAVE A 97 F350 WITH THE 5 SP. MAN AND 4.10 AXLE AND IT HAS BEEN TROUBLE FREE. I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE A 6TH GEAR IN THAT.
MANUALS LEAVE THE GEAR CHOICE UP TO THE DRIVER THE WAY IT SHOULD BE. THERE IS NOTHING MORE AGGRAVATING TO ME THEN AN AUTO TRANNY DOWNSHIFTING PREMATURELY ON A HILL, WHEN I KNOW I COULD HAVE CRESTED THE HILL WITHOUT THAT DOWNSHIFT BY LUGGING THE MOTOR A LITTLE.
I HAVE OWNED 4 FORD TRUCKS WITH MANUALS AND 2 WITH AUTOS AND HAVE HAD NO TROUBLE WITH ANY. CHOOSE WHAT YOU LIKE, I THINK YOULL GET THE LONGEVITY OUT OF EITHER.
IN MY OPINION, AUTOMATICS ARE BORING TO DRIVE AND FOR THAT REASON ALONE I WOUD GET THE MANUAL!
GOOD LUCK.
I use it to plow snow an haul a car trailer for my 1940 Ford coupe and also a Boat 21ft long. I've been driving manuals all my life and have only replaced a few clutches, but these were on vehicles that had more than 1 driver.
I agree autos are boring, but this all depends whether you drive city
or highway. The 6 speed has a granny gear in it ,that will pull a house down if needed.
Its all up to the driver preference

You can't go wrong ,with either
Good Luck ,tough decision

I sold my 87 f350 with 172,000 miles on it with the original clutch in it . I sold it to a friend who put it right to work towing a landscape trailer on a daily basis and he put another 15000 miles on it. He sold it to a kid who promptly put on a set of 36" swampers, and beat it to death. At 195000 it finally needed a clutch!
Another big factor is axle ratio. With a 4.10 i can creep away from a stop with very little gas and very little clutch . In granny low you can practically just dump the clutch and drive away. With 3.73's you will need more clutch action especially if towing.
As for mileage, my 97 f350 5 spd with the 351 gets 13.8 consistently while our v10 auto with 3.73 gets 11.3-12.5 mpg with a stiff tail wind.
