My mechanic has been working with a Ford technician on my 99 Ford Explorer for the past month trying to fix an idling issue I have. (Mainly in the colder months)
When I start it, it revs very high than drops very low - there are times when it will stall out. It seems to drive ok - a little rough - but ok, check engine light is on and all sensors have been checked.
Yea the lights on there is a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Get someone who has a reader/scanner tool or a shop to find out what it is, if you cant find out what it means there is a sticky thread posted at the top of the listing here with ideas/possible fixes. Also there is the whole gambit of normal fixes like your MAF, IAC, EGR, DPFE. The most common(and it sounds like what ive experienced was the IAC valve see the sticky on that all the way at the top of the threads in here
Leaking lower intake gaskets have been a big problem on th 4.0 explorers. If you've already check the IAC I go their next. I had a similar problem with my 2000 and this was my problem. Run smooth now on cold starts and no more CEL.
