Idle/stall problems
Alright, after reading ALL of the threads about this topic, i decided to replace the whole damn thing (the IAC valve). And i STILL have the same exact problem. What the heck could be wrong? It stalls on me after i start it up for the first time in the morning, and idles rough after that...... and even after i been driving it around all day, it will still randomly stall. I HATE red lights and stop signs, i keep having to shift it into neutral (doesnt stall as much in neutral). The damn truck shakes violently if i keep it in drive with my foot on the brake at idle...keeps wanting to lurch forward, and 75% of the time, it will just plain die. I've eliminated the IAC valve as a culprit, now whats next? The problem is on my 92 Explorer 4.0 SOHC.

Does it shake violently at a light and then start running smooth? I think your problem could be the fuel pressure regulator sticking open. Some of these regulators have the spring slightly off center and it wears a bevel on just one side. At high vacuum conditions like idle the valve opens the widest, slip off to the side and stick. I had a devil of a time finding it on my 92. I pulled the fuel pump fuse and wired in a meter that I kept in the cab. Just before it would stall, I would see the current drop from around 5A down to 2.5A Could be other things but monitoring currenent will confirm or rule out the fuel system. You could change the fuel pump relay for grins.
