Prime Oil Pump?
What am I doing wrong?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
John
I just went out and dropped the oil pan and pump (something I was trying to avoid!) stuck the pickup tube down in the oil turned shaft and it pumped oil. When I was putting it back together it looked like the pickup tube was just barely reaching the oil. So I just temporarily put the pan back up and added a sixth quart of oil hooked the drill up to the shaft and now I have oil pumping.
The only thing I can come up with is the pickup tube is too short. This is the same pickup tube that was in use on the previous engine, also the same oil pan.
Ever had this problem? Its really got me scratching my head.
Thanks,
John
If there's oil on the dipstick, it should be on the pick-up. Not sure what your setup is, but there should only be about 1/4" between the pickup and the bottom of the pan.
Try using a real plug-in-the-wall drill, and crank on it for more than 60 seconds. Make sure it's engaged to the pump when turning (you should feel resistance).
I've done this many times, and it usually takes about 60 seconds of "full blast" to get it to take. You'll feel the drill "load up" when it grabs the oil.
Im building a 460 long block at the moment also. You gota hold that sucker in ur hands and pour the oil inside. I use gear oil just because ive had to take on back appart once and reprime it. I never used grease however, too afraid it would mix with the oil and do something weird to it.
Dont forget to use non detergant for 500 miles or so.
Im stuck at finding an intake manifold for my long block. Im doing an engine swap from 5.8 to 7.5, so im starting fresh with nothing. Been havin trouble finding one.
