This motor does not like to rev past 3 grand and I was thiunking that maybe the ingnition timing is not advancing properly, also it will backfire really loudly in a down shift and eventually turn on the cel. Any help would be appreciated.
..........ummm........the vacuum advance diaghpragms on 80's vehicles should be replaced by now............otherwise,can be a bit krispy!--try suckin' on it!!!
its got 75000 miles, the vacuume system is in perfect condition now. I have no exhaust leaks and the air injection system works perfect. Is the timing chain a probability, how often do they skip?
On my 89 it was the cat. It was plugged almost solid. You could remove it and dig all the crap out, and put it back on or just replace with a pipe. Don't know about emmision laws though. It may be a factor depending where you live
Timing chains really don't jump teeth that often unless their is high mileage and a backfire or something similar that makes the engine "cough". 75,000 miles is not excessively high. I'd try BigTork's suggestion of dropping the cat and try running the engine with it unhooked to see if it will rev. Years ago I was working on a Toyota with simialr problems and the engine ran perfect as soon as we disconnected the muffler (no cat on that old Toyota).
