I have been looking for a bendix power steering box for my 65 f100 2wd and have had no luck, but then my local parts house says he can get one for a 66 f100. Does anyone know if the 66 box will work in a 65.THANKS James
Napa parts online lists a rebuilt unit still available. Not completely sure of the 1965 as mine is a 66 but you can search their parts online by the year and model of your truck and see if it comes up. Very pricey with a hefty core charge. For the money you could switch to a later model unit with power steering. I just finished mine and its great. Hope that helps.
Took a Bendix unit out of a 65 in salvage yard. Came across 2 bendix units that day after months of searching. Believe the original owner made the swap; on the other hand, a tread in FTE forum where member thought it possible 65 'camper special' came with option p/s.
Have not installed yet, called around got price of approx. $300 to have rebuilt. Want to make sure before putting out the money. Reviewing Pro's and Con's of using Bendix vs the Ford p/s unit.
May want to run search, topic has come up on number of occasions.
Mark and Dave, I have a 3 on the tree and want to convert over to automatic and I bought an orignal autoshift steering column. If I went with the newer ford gear box, can the autoshift column be shorten the required 2 to 3 inches. I'am thinking this way may be cheaper than buying a Bendix box. THANKS James
I have been told that power steering became available on Nov. 10, '65 (but this might be for Canadian-built trucks only). If this is true all '65s and some '66s were not available with p/s.
Hey Mark - do you remember what the Bendix core charge was?
Eric
James-i have been stalled at the point you are at for some time now. i need to get off back side and make decision. Not sure about shortening the autoshift column. Have been calling around for shortening the 3 on the tree. Intend to take column in for estimate w/in next couple of weeks then make decision.
The issue has come up on several occasions. Have couple of threads in this forum that may help.
PeteboyFord, Banjopicker, cdherman, and others have addressed the issue in other threads in this forum. If get time, will try and look them up. Down loaded the above two for reference purposes.
Good luck,
dave

Guys the chassis parts are all bolt up exchange from 65 to 79, what will fit on one will fit on the other.
The Bendix gear has the same rag joint location at the non power. The newer Ford gear moves the rag joint closer to the firewall, but the total length from the center line of the gear to the horn button is the same on both units.
If you have 3 on the tree and want to keep the setup you will need to find a setup in a salvage yard. They are out there, but may take some scrounging. Most 73 & newer trucks had ps. and most came with auto trannys. Most guys convert to floor shift rather than deal with the column issue.
The best thing to do when you start yearning for ps & pb is buy a donor truck and harvest the parts, sell the parts that you don't use and get yours for free.
There is a company that lists a rebuilt Bendix unit on ebay relatively regularly. I think they are rebuilders. Their price is $295. That's for a rebuilt unit with warrranty. You'll only get a working unit from a junk yard if you have a lot of luck. On the other hand, in the junk yard you can harvest pump, mounts, lines etc as well.
My understanding is that the Ford unit was phased in over a period of time, perhaps as various plants ran out of Bendix stock and switched to ford. 65 and 66 seem to have always had bendix originally, By 69 all were Ford. But it pays to look at 67 and 68 trucks. You may bump into a bendix unit. Of course, any 67 to 73 truck that was converted to PS through the years may very well have gotten a Bendix unit, as this is the bolt up solution for those trucks too, if they came out with manual steering.
