Post Rear Springs

Why do the 250's and 350 single real wheel trucks both carry 6 springs? ( at least some I've bent down to look at )
I looked up ratings in Fords 02' specs and see 6084lbs. listed for 250's and 6830lbs for the 350 ( axle rating ).
Rear spring rate is listed as 6830lbs. for both the 250 and 350 SRWheel.
Why doesn't the 250 have one less leaf or the 350 one more ?
Whats the deal with the 7700lbs. F150 - is it the old 250 light duty???
I am kind of confused

I believe the higher rating on the F350 could be due to it's tires being able to handle more weight.

Pretty much.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-Feb-02 AT 01:06 AM (EST)]the only diffs i can see between teh 250 and 350....

tires (as general monsta pointed out)
badging
4" rear block (250's have a 2" block)
higher gvwr

i had always thought there was an axulary (sp?) spring standard on the 350, but today i was at my local dealer ordering a 4" block and u-bolts from a 350 and found out that that extra spring is an option.

I'm not sure the printed specs for '02 are correct... especially if you got them from www.fordtraining.com

Yeah I was confused on that one too! I wonder if it's a typo?

What I DO know is that on my '02 250 I took it down to my local spring shop and had two more springs added to the tail end! I pull a typical landscape trailer (fairly heavy tongue weight-300-400#?) and it sat the stock setup down in the rear end. Didn't like the look of the front sticking up in the air, if you know what I mean! $350 Later it took care of the problem...

I'd think the manufacturer would make sure these things sit (somewhat) level when hooked up to typical towing trailers before shipping! Go figure...

I think they attempt to with the use of helper springs. Air bags as an option would be much better though!

Hmmm... makes me wonder about your springs OR the actual tongue-weight of the trailer. I sure don't think that 300# should "squat" the truck... it didn't on my '00 F250. I can drop my 5th-wheel on my '01 F350 and it barely moves- pin weight is about 800 lbs. I hauled a full load of wood and the truck leveled out but didn't hit the overload springs.

Monsta and NoMo,

Don't get me wrong, I'm not raggin' on my truck - just saying that I was a bit diappointed at the way she 'sat' with my Lscape trailer hitched up! I mean it wasn't dragging the bumper by any means, but it did put it down a good couple of inches and it was definately noticable (lower in the tail).

After the re-spring it sits real nice - even with a good load on 'er...take a look at what I had on it just this past Tuesday morning (1-29-02)...1.5Ton! Sure darn near sittin' level if you ask me!!! X22

Looks great!

I just don't think that you should have "needed" the springs reworked. Oh well- it's done and looks marvelous.

I had to order an F350 instead of the F250 because for CA, FORD will not build a 6spd short bed in the F250. The fleet manager and I researched the differences between the two and the only significant diff. is the tires, The 235/85 are max rated at 3042lbs each and the 265/75 at 3415lbs. The front springs are rated at 3200lbs on the F250 and 3350 lbs on the F350. These front spring values are for super cabs with 5.4l. Other engine/cab configurations are different to account for the obvious varying front weights. There are apparently no other significant differences except that the GVWR for the F350 is 9700lbs for CA instead of 9900lbs for everyone else. The F250 is 8800lbs in all 50 states. I have found no one who can explain that one!

P.S. My neighbor bought an F250 long bed after he saw mine and we can find no visual differences except for the tires and badges.

The F250/F350 debate has been going since the new ones were introduced in '99. Some say the only difference is badging & GVWR sticker; others say the rear suspension & part of the axles are different.

As an FYI, the "F350 tires" are an option on the F250- so using that as argument for/against differences isn't valid either.
