speed limiter

my friend told me about a speed limiter in his 96, and he said he just snapped it off, and it can go another 25 mph faster than it used to. is he bs-ing me, or is it really that simple?

As far as I know, the limiter is computer-controlled. I've heard of people pulling the fuse for the dash, thereby disabling the speed sensor and eliminating the governor, but I've never heard of anyone breaking something off & going faster...

yea, i heard about the fuse thing too, but i want to do something permanent, and driving without a speedometer and working dash is not my idea of permanent. shoot, i didn't think it would be so hard. where would i find the computer? is it behind the dash? or under the hood.

The speed limiter is programmed into the PCM. Disabling the speed sensor in the rear diff. will throw a CEL, as well as mess up transmission shift points (if it is an automatic). The only way to change the speed limiter is to install a PCM performance chip.

keep in mind your tire ratings. if i disabled my limiter my truck could do 130mph all day w/the 2.73 rear end, but the tires wouldn't handle it. if your driving over 100mph you probably need to upgrade to tires that are rated for that. keep in mind that an f150 wont handle very well going that fast. the lightning can but not the standard f150. if you do go that fast i recommend getting the tach out of an old lightning, which goes up to 130 mph.
